1984 Patrol - 5 speed box and 33" tyres

Post by mvcoller »

I have just done a 5 speed conversion on my 1984 Patrol. I fitted a Cabstar g/box. What a mission... Had to move the g/box mounting xmember back about 30mm and the xfer case xmember back by about 200mm. I also had to make 3 new propshafts, well I didn't have to, I could just have modified the existing ones, but I felt it best to have new UJs and sliding yolk, seeing the trouble I went to, I may as well go all the way.

Instead of doing 104kph @ 4000rpm in top (4th) before, I now do 3000 rpm at 104 in top (5th).

Cost? R2500 for the box and R4600 for the mod, including the 3 props. Was it worth it? Well, for me it was, but I will have to do lots of KMs to make up for the costs. Then I am not even talking about fitting 33" tyres and 10" wide rims.

The Cabal box has shorter 1st & 2nd gears than the old box the Patrol had in, so even with the bigger tyres, it will be better offroad. 3rd & 4th are the same as the old box, 4th being a 1:1 on both boxes. With the bigger wheels, pulling power in 5th is not its strong point, with 120kph coming up at only 3000rpm, but on the level road and slight uphills its manages well enough in 5th

Malcolm

But, boy does it look good.... Grrrr

Sorry I have only lookeed at this post now again.

Ek het oorspronlik by Engines for Africa in Heriotdale gaan kyk, hulle het baie Cabal boxe daar.

As jy verder hulp soek, bel my op 083 296-5720
