ENGINE CONVERSIONS
Seen that JG and Mayhem is busy with this,I saw a loadbed truck carrying a rolled Navara, looks like a write off. It got me thinking.
I dont know what engine but looking at the specs the 2.5 d delivers 126kw and 404 nm more than the ZD 30 or the 4.0 V6 delivers 198kw , dont know the torgue here.
Wont this engines make a good transplant into a GU Troll. Those vehicle are more plentifull than Patrols. So the chances of finding one at scrapyards are more likely.I suppose both those engines will also be more frugal with juice .
Will it work?
What other engines are compatable for conversions .
4.2D F250 ?
2.5 D 128KW VW ?
IVECO ?
2.7D DISCO 3 or 4.4 V8P ?
2.7 CDI M/BENZ ?
Those 6.5 d conversions , are those engines not too big and heavy?
Interresting subject this heart transplant stories , especially the engines lying in scrapyards or wreckers waiting to get a second life back in a body.

Re: ENGINE CONVERSIONS
Depends on what you want to achieve. If it is all out power at good value for money a LS is the way to go. Kits are around and it has been done a couple times. The power is cheap and the engine light. You can buy 350hp out of the box for $7500. Going the transplant of anything else is not easy but if that is what you want then you might as well start looking at a VH45 for incredible power to weight and rev range. Or the Duramax if you're into serious diesel power. The 6.5 my opinion is a waste. Might as well put a duramax in for the effort and get yourself 600hp and a mind blowing 1200Nm torque. You could also put a V10 Viper in, they go for relatively good money.
But, to put an engine in and not gain significant something, power or fuel or whatever floats your boat, is not worth it. So if you want 199kW, just put the 4.8 in and get it over with and it is a much easier swap. Making diesels go fast is expensive, so if diesel power is your thing a duramax is a good bet. Or build a 4.2 up from scratch like dennis did. Still expensive.
Value for money and ease of install a LS will beat any conversion in my opinion.
I wanted to build a VH45 in and use a Navara diesel 6 speed box onto a dual transfer Patrol case. This would give me 450hp and 400Nm from 1600rpm. Rev limit at 7500rpm. The diesel box has the sweetest set of ratios and the Vh basically bolts onto it. plus it is a really smooth box. The seeing as the engine needs to move forward a bit a dual transfer becomes an option because theres a bit of space. But getting hold of wiring loom and ecu for Vh as well as getting hold of transmission from navara is almost impossible. Next on the list, Duramax wth 6 speed Allsion auto onto Patrol tranfer. 11second quarter mile here we come. Had a long chat with the Bruce Banks guys at SEMA and the cost of a Banks crate motor is high but still way cheaper than a tricked out 4.2engine. So watch this space. If that doesn't work out it will be LS all the way.

Re: ENGINE CONVERSIONS
Hi Freakazoid, pse help whats A VH45 and a LS?
Thx for the reply, I dont actually want to achieve anything. It just seems to replace a Patrol GU engine with same is nearly impossible to find.
But if I look whats available from scrapyards , there are nice alternatives as mentioned.
I definatlely never in my life will need high performance from a vehicle.
I am of the 2.25 old Landie Petrol engine stable, It gets me where I want and back type of guy, but what I require is to sit at a constant speed not fall back to 70km/h at a small incline while touring. Its the most frustrating thing on the road.
Off road where I go , on holiday trips in ect, never ever experienced a lack of power , cause all the vehicles I have driven before I use the gearbox to get me up , down or out of sticky situations.
But what I like is a BIG vehicle , I pack a lot of stuff. A puny little Suzuki Jimny or Lada will get out more places than a souped up monster truck,or any Patrol on this forum, but dammit I need to pack more than a case of cold ones.(sorry boys, hier gaat ek seker pakslae kry).
O yes I prefer to have a diesel engine, reason only consumption, low volatality of fuel and risk of fire, thats all.And displacement of under 3000 cc

Re: ENGINE CONVERSIONS
Hello Koos,
The VH45DE is a 4.5 liter 90° V8 engine with an aluminum block and aluminum DOHC 4-valve heads. It was developed by Nissan for the Infiniti Q45 sport sedan around 1989 and was built until 2002. The performance figures are around 207 kW @ 6000 rpm and 396 N·m @ 4000 rpm. Some versions have variable valve timing.
The GM LS range of engines are V-8 engines used in rear-wheel-drive General Motors cars and pick-ups. Notably the LS engine has been the only powerplant of the Chevrolet Corvette since 1997. They are relatively compact compared to their power output. There are many versions of the LS engine (LS1, LS2, LS3, LS6, LS7, LS9). Have a look at this link for some background: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_LS_engine.

That is fighting talk indeed. Re: ENGINE CONVERSIONS
Thanks Gerrit
To elaborate a bit on the Nissan stable of V8's, which by the way are some of the worlds most refined V8's out there. It started as Gerrit said with the VH45 and VK41. It then moved on to the VK45 and VK56 and now you get the VK50 and soon the VK60. The VK45 is the next generation of the VH45 which is now the Vk50. The number designation refers to the engine size. The VK56 is a different engine made in the US for the Nissan Titan, that is apparently growing to 6l. The Vh45 engine was used for 3 years in the Indy racing league. They dropped the capacity to 3.5L and got 650hp out of the enigne in naturally aspirated form. The VH45 transplant is very popular amongst Z owners. They take the VG30 or VG30DETT out and put the VH, they TT it and run between 600hp and some guys up to 1000hp. All this wthout opening the engine or doing internal stuff. The beauty is you pick the engine up for R8500 delivered at your front door and then with some blood sweat and tears (all conversions are painful) you have an easy 300hp that you can turn into 400hp with proper intake, exhaust and tune.
The engine weighs less than a VG30, so it is a brilliant option for Sani's and hardbodies as well. It weighs less than half of the Patrol iron blocks.
Koos
Your Lada/Jimny statement I am afraid just trivializes your argument. Yes they are fun to drive but just don't even come close to the performance of even a bog standard Patrol. And then they like falling over as well. If your Landie got you where you wanted and back I assume you didn't go many places. Koos, all said in jest I assume. But really, proper recreational off-roading, not the brandy and coke or break your car or challenge vehicle stuff, can be very extreme if you want it to be. And then Lada's and 2.2 petrol Landies are good for getting spectators there and back.

Re: ENGINE CONVERSIONS
I just want to make a statement re vehicles and fires. Guys, if your vehicle catches alight. Regardless if it is diesel or petrol. Get out and walk away. It is going to burn to bits. In very few cases you will be lucky enough to stop the fire quick enough with the fire extinguisher at hand. 3 weeks ago I was unfortunate enough to be witness to a vehicle burning out again. It was a diesel Colt bakkie. In an industrial area with plenty fire extinguishers and fire hoses around. The factory close by emptied 3 big fire extinguishers on the car in the first few minutes of the fire, then proceed with normal hoses. After 15 minutes, yes quick, the fir brigade was there. They too 1/2 hour to empty the fire truck on the vehicle. They then switched over to the fire mains and put 2 hoses on the vehicle for another hour. The problem was the the diesel was pouring out of the tank and because it is so hot it kept on burning. All the hoses did was slow the burn rate down. they could not put out the fire. And this is a diesel, which most of the diesel drivers believe is impervious to fire. Sorry, your vehicle is going to die just like my petrol. I realized again, that if your vehicles catches alight and you cannot stop it within the first seconds, you will lose it. Just walk away and try and prevent it from spreading.

Freakazoid
I drive a small Gq SWB patrol, and would like to get some more power to the wheels.
What would you install and were would I be able to get the motor?
