Regarding the pistons, I didn't use Nissan originals, but used "keystone" or " Alfin" ( i think that's what they were called ) pistons and rings. The rings have a bevel on the one side and the piston then matches the bevel. These were recommended to me by Tour de Frans ( the 4.2 diesel guru ), they were a fraction of the cost and apparently work better than original as the ring will squeeze tighter on the sleeve when under higher compression. Now I don't know if this will work on the ZD30, but cannot see why not as these pistons are made for turbo diesels.
I opted for everything OEM, Cedric - call me old fashioned, but with the ZD30 being a relatively finniky engine (or so it seems) I thought it wiser to stick to the original parts. What RGM are doing is a ceramic coating on the piston tops, and then a teflon coating around the sides, also the exhaust manifold will get a ceramic coating and I just found out that they are ceramic coating the turbo as well! Anyone else done this before - all to dissipate the heat.
I will try to take some pics as soon as everything gets back from the engineers. The block is still being rebored, and the rest of the bits are being coated, should all be back tomorrow or latest Monday, then they can start assembling - so just maybe i'll have her back by next weekend.... holding thumbs!
Once back, I will need to run her in - never had to do that before... What are the general do's and don'ts for the running in period, and how many km's does one need to cover. I know now that the RPM's must not remain the same for long - anything else??
Cheers,
Keep you all posted.
Dankie manne - as always.... you ou's are a fountain of knowledge!!
Still no news - I was hoping that everything would have been back on Friday so assembly could start early Monday, but no news yet. I want to take some pics of all the bits 'n pieces as well as the cleaned up engine before she's mounted back in the engine bay. I'll post once i've got some.
Ok, got the call today - everything has arrived except one gasket set. At least work can eventually begin! I popped past this evening to take some pics of the new parts:
The Cylinder Head was still wrapped up so I never took any pics of it.
