Update.

Cost for switch at Nissan was around R1,500 then adding two re-lays and Auto lec's charge looking at around R2300 at the least

Second option was to put in a toggle switch with the re-lays = R1,000 much better but a toggle switch is a pain in the . . .

Took the Trol to Audio village in Krugersdorp to replace the window switch as it was faulty, told them about the lights - left the Troll there and according to them - changed a few fuse's with higher rating and R200 bucs later and all lights are working 100%.

Now for the question - acording to their guy it is not necesarry to fit the re-lays and the bigger fuse's will work 100%, do I put in re-lays for in-case or do I leave as is and see if any future problems surface??

If all switches and wiring are rated for the stronger lights fitted (current rating) then all should be fine.
If the fuses blew because of overrating the original design and not from an mistake then you might be faced with the original costing as you described.
The next weakest link will give. Not if but rather when.
I would get two R30 (30Amp) relays from Midas and add them right at the lights to take the load and preserve the current lighting circuit.

MAXIMA switchgear should be compatible with the GQ -- GU and Skyline and Datsun 1200 bakkie will share a lot of the electrical goodies .. [e.g - The 1200 bakkie antenna fits as is onto LOBO ... against the A Pillar]

Agree 100% with Riaan... Don't take a chance. You could land up with a Patrol like Wimpie's..... burnt out !!!

The current that the lights and spots draw is quite high. If you look at the size of wire of even the standard wiring, I can't believe that that is big enough to handle that current, add stronger globes or 100w or even 55w spots and that wire, I feel cannot handle that amount of current. Your wiring is also not of the newest either and possible corrosion within the wire could add to the resistance and heat buildup of the wire. The relay will definitely curb this

Ok in the year that I have had the GQ I only used the lights once So not forseing any night driving in the near future, I will leave as is until September when it goes to Mr Cummings and let him have a look at it, think that should give me peace of mind required

I fitted the relay when I upgraded the headlight to 100w, and have never had problems. This would be the most reliable and safest option. Also went the LED route for the spots as the current draw is low and better light. LED spots have become more affordable and they are very reliable.

Will definately ask Graham to have them fitted, I am not going to fiddle now as they are working and I'm leaving next week Thursday for the River trip and "no lights" are hopefully required for the trip

LED spots is still in excess of R3000 and thats a lot of money for spot lights acording to a government employee's income
