Hi, had the same sort of problem, striped starter and found brushes had made plenty dust that prevented current going to armature from brushes, put armature in drill and used 120 grit sandpaper and cleaned it, just remember to "cut" the grooves between the copper segments or you will have to pull the starter and do it again (I got very good at removing and replacing the starter) after a couple of times I got it done properly and it workes 100% now :mytwocents:. Its not hard to remove and replace the starter. If you need a hand give me a pm.

thank you very much Martyn, for a start (mind the punn) my plan is to first check and clean all connections/earths and then to remove the starter(as per my original post my gutt feel is still that the starter is the culprit) - it's great to have so many different views and advise - i will follow up on all of them

hopefully i can give some positive feedback after the weekend - it's so frustrating not having the car at home and being able to fiddle during the week but i just don't have space for it
i am actually starting to contemplate selling it and replacing the platkar which is my daily drive (but a 4.5 or 4.8 Patrol as a daily drive in traffic is not really practical  )

Leander, I don't know what distance your daily commute is, but evenm at the current petrol prices it works me out cheaper to drive my trol than to pay instalments, insurance and fuel for a second car.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

Peter jy maak 'n goeie punt

Wow.... I've never seen that before... Don't know how to successfully repair that. I would assume you would have to open that up and replace the cable from inside.... but like I said, I really am not sure what the insides even look like. At least this looks like a cheap thing to repair !!

Leander, If you can do it, remove the lug(?) and replace with a new one, solder is just going to give you hassles.
