Oh dear -- so there I was on my way back from the farm in the Free State -- still running in the new motor (1 500km since rebuild, never revved over 3 000 revs) just outside Kroonstad when there was a horrible "clack clack" knocking followed by a sort of a well, passing wind feeling from the motor and a whole lot of blue smoke
Guess one of the newly re-manufactured valves broke, but I don't know. Now my vehicle sits in Kroonstad. Will go down and load it on a road trailer this weekend, return it to the guy who re-built it and he will have to start again...bummer it was going so well.
Would appreciate any advice...re-build, replace with a Lexus V8, look for a diesel engine?

Ouch.... I hope the damage isn't too bad.....
Advice.... phew.... I guess you need to open up the motor to see what is damaged first.... maybe a broken compression ring, or broken valve, broken piston... difficult to say. It could be caused by bad oil pressure, or bad part or workmanship.
Personally I'd keep it a thoroughbred Nissan
Diesel is nice but has disadvantages
Petrol is nice but has disadvantages
Its a personal preference on that point
Peter.... where about's in Jhb are you?

Re: Engine spares for a TB45E 2001 GRX
For those of you who have not heard/or may be interested in my disaster...I am the only person in the entire world to have blown up my motor not once....but twice.
Having found and joined this forum earlier in the year, I was very excited to be able to have my 2001 4.5 motor rebuilt with two spare pistons and conrods that I bought + other odds and ends from Jeanne Volschenk.
My much-loved (not by my wife) Patrol had lain abandoned for a number of years as I was unable to find help. It was at a garage in Pretoria. At various times it had had the head rebuilt, new valves to replace the one which was broken, the camshaft and the crankshaft reground etc. Possession being nine tenths of the law, the guy where the car had ended up, had to do the re-build (or, unstated but real, was that he didn't want to give the vehicle back...) He duly rebuilt it all, cost me a total of about R35 to R40k and gave me the vehicle to run in. Less than 2000km later I had a motor with which had a broken conrod -- this time it came out the side of the block. The oil pump failed...
To my HUGE relief and thanks to the friendliness of people on this forum -- particularly Tinus Lotz I was put in touch with WimpieO and bought his engine and gearbox.
Once again my man in Pretoria installed it for me. Once again disaster struck -- but not so seriously this time -- when the hose which leads the gearbox oil to the oilcooler came off and emptied all the gearbox oil onto the road, disabling the clutch. (I still haven't told my wife about that bit -- as she is already refusing to drive or go in the Troll!!)
That fixed, I now seem to be up and running -- but the vehicle looks a bit sad from having stood unloved for those two to three years. I have just fitted new tyres; still looking for seat covers to spruce it up a bit -- if anyone has any ideas -- and a radio to replace the one that is missing/stolen. Gave it a good valet, which doesn't seem to have helped very much.
Enormous, enormous thanks to all of you -- especially Wimpie, Tinus and Jeanne for your help and friendliness. My Patrol would be rusting in a heap somewhere if it were not for your guys commitment and determination to help me. I really appreciate it.
