I had a similar problem.

It landed up being a tiny water leak between the timing chain cover and head.Problem was that i had to strip the whole front section including removing the timing gears.

I replaced the thermostat, waterpump as well as a few other gaskets and o rings well i was at it. I also had the radiator flushed.

I would first do a pressure test to make sure their are no leaks and then replace the thermostat and flush the radiator.

New thermostat did not get the job done. The top pipe is hot and the bottom one cold, even after new thermostats. I thought these car’s are reliable and easy to fix.( Blou draad en ‘n tang ) SURE. Do any one know Kobus from Eazi auto in Botha Ave?

Three likely causes:
1) Faulty thermostat (they are not all perfect, even a new one).
2) Faulty waterpump.
3) Blocked radaiator or major engine passageway.

Looking at the amount of effort required, I would recommend checking in the floowing order:
1) Remove both radiator hoses, then run water through with your hose pipe, it should flow freely.
2) Remove the thermostat, and pump water through the engine with the hose pipe, again, it should flow freely.
3) If the above has not shown the problem, put the thermostat into a glass/pyrex container full of boiling water, and see if it opens. It should open at least 5-8mm.
4) Try the engine without thermostat, particularly if you are not sure of the results of any of the above tests.
5) If you still have the same problem, remove and inspect the water pump.

Good luck!

Maybe the sensor is the problem - to check that you need to get a temp reading from the water going into the radiator. The radiator guys have that infra red meter to test the temp.

Kobus, if the bottom pipe is cold, there must be a circulation problem?

Water pump? If the belt is slipping, this could be the cause?

It is not overheating when idling so the it gets cooler when idling. So don't know about waterpump. Flused pipes and still sam.
