Chassis Rust

Hallo

I have realised that my chassis has quite a bit of rust. I understand the vehicle lived near the coast and was even used for boat launching and the like. Remember, I never saw it before I bought it.

I have heard people speaking about sandblasting, repairing any obvious damage to the integrity of the steel and then rubberising the entire chassis.

What do you guys think about this and where do I go to get this done? I spoke to Safari Centre and they don't know who to recommend even.

Take it to ITALIAN PANELBEATRS [Mitchell street; Pta West] Speak to Josè Costa - tell him I sent you - let him have a look and advise accordingly..

I will not recommed rubberising as the rust will just grow beneath it. Sandblast and then galvanize the chassis

I have been referred to Protec in Silverton. Apparently they clean the chassis then sand the chassis, repair any areas that have damage and then paint with a product called "Rust Bust" This product is supposed to stop the rust from continuing, form a water tight barrier and serve as a primer for other paint.

I take the Patrol in on Monday to see their workshop and get an idea of their expertise. If I am not happy, I will look into the guys in Mitchell Street.

If I could, I would like to avoid having to remove the chassis from the rest of the body. I can just see something going wrong in the process.

I have used a product called Russist (not on my Patrol) which is similar to what you described above. It worked very well (I did not even really sand or clean, just steel brush and then paint), but would obviously not provide the same level of protection as galvanizing.

Also, if you do not strip the car down, there will be areas you miss, so you will have to keep fighting the rust that develops from there. Furthermore, and more seriously, you can't get into the inside of the chassis, but galvanising will.

Galvanizing is the only thing that will reach those deep hidden places but your chassis will possibly weigh 50kg more afterwards
On my old Safari I still had to take out rust every year even after using all those rust converter primers and sanding it down to bare metal

I'll go and have a chat with Protec in Silverton. It is starting to sound like galvinising is the only long term option. I dindn't even think about the inside of the chassis not being reached by this procedure - it almost begs the question : "What's the use?"

Usually when I do something, I want to go for the long-term option first, even if it is more expensive. And that is especially true for something like the chassis. It doesn't help taking the quick route only to spend more over time havign to repair it and later havign to either calvinise anyway or in the worst case look for another chassis.

So, who are the specialists with calvinising? Can any of you please post a picture of a calvinsed chassis?

I have never galvanized something the size of a chassis. The galvanisers I have used up to now (for the bash plates) are Supergalv in Alrode, number is 011 908 3418, however I do not know if their tanks are large enough.

Alternatively try Robor on 011 876 2904

Try and find out if they have experience with chassis, as I have heard that the heat may twist something like a chassis (not sure if this was just scaremongering)

However what you are considering is quite a large job and will obviously take several weeks, are you OK for daily transport? The cost is likely to be R8.00/kg, not sure what the chassis weighs?

The chassis is almost identical, just a few small additions were made on the later cars to accomodate the longer nose. As far as I can determine, engine and suspension mounts are identical, as well as the main body mounts. That way you could prep the chassis, and then just transfer everything?
