Thing is, the engine technology also has an impact on how quickly the oil gets dirty.
And according to my understanding, indirect injection (as found in the TD engines) are about the worst in this regard.

Thus the oil change intervsl is to an extent determined by the oil's ability to carry away impurities and remain sufficiently lubricious.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

2000 TD42 at almost 900 000 km. All services myself around 7500 km intervals. I have always used the cheapest 15W-40 Diesel spec oil I could find on the shelf at Midas, Autozone etc. .....regardless of brand name.

TB42 manual says: API SE, SF or SG is reccommended.
Been using Helix HX5 all along which is API SN rated.
Somehow I devoloped an itch to feed my TB42 some delo 400, but now I'm wonderingh if it was a mistake....

Good evening Fanus.

Delo 400 has a API SL rating for Petrol engines. It is much higer spec than required by your TB42 as you mentioned but still backwards compatible as it supercedes the older specs so dont worry you didnt make a mistake by using it.
You can even use the Delo Gold, its still higer spec than the required TB42 spec but bit cheaper than Delo 400.

Delo Gold and Delo 400 have high content ratings of Zn which is the best additive for push-rod / OHV engines. So excellent for the TB42.

A petrol engine CAN get glazed, but not as easily as a diesel. Glazing is essentially combusted oil residue and carbon that remains on the cylinder wall if the engine isn't operated at optimum cylinder pressures.
