I have three times before had the centres of the normal 6 x 140 mags opened up from 108mm to 110 mm. Just recently I had 17" Ford steel rims opened up to 110mm for my trailer so I could in emergencies share wheels between the trailer and my Patrol.

Any engineering works worth their salt could successfully do this.

I took the Ford rims to an engineering shop that in the 70s and 80 widened steel wheels for me. It cost me R180 to open the centre's of the three steel wheels.

I was told by A-line mag manufacturers that it is not safe to machine the bore out.

I can't see how a mag made with a 110mm center is stronger thsn one made with a 108mm center machined out to 110mm?

I think they are just covering their butts.

Certainly, the A-line wheels I had machined gave me 10 years of trouble-free service.

They told you a load of hogwash.

If standard Patrol mags are made with a centre bore of 110mm and the PCD is 139.4 or if you take a same or similar mag make that has a centre bore of 108 PCD and enlarge the CB from 108mm to 110mm, what is the difference between the two final products? Both the original one and the modified one will have 29,4mm of metal between the stud hole's centre point and the edge of the Centre Bore, if the material is the same metal, the same thickness and presumably the same tensile strength?

I had many, many sets of mags modified for racing and raced them like that for many years, never ever had a problem. The issue is to ensure you use a reputable crowd.

I used the late Cedric Saffy (of Mag Wheel Services in Mayfair Jhb) and Tony Domingo ex SA Formula one driver when SA still had the only National F1 series.

I had mags widened, offsets changed, PCDs changed, number of wheel stud holes changed, centre bores changed, you name it, I had it done and I never ever had any issues.
