My 4.2 GQ tends to be a bit "lui"

Post by Jules »

Hello to all, lately about one week after I had my petrol filter and spark plugs changed my Patrol sometimes ( when changing gear ) have a short/brief power loss, as if the petrol is not coming through continuosly. When the mechanic initialy changed the petrol filter and sparkplugs he made a booboo ( but that has been fixed ).

Where is the best place to start the diagnostic check, please understand I am an accountant and not to much technical inclined but I do know where is the bonnet and the plug to connect my freezer for cold beers.

Is it perhaps that my Patrol has developed some cobwebs and that just a good petrol peddle against the floor for a few kilometers will clean its throat a bit

HI Jules

I'm inclined to say check the fuel pump first.
If memory serves me correctly, the old GQ 4.2's had a mechanical fuel pump that runs off of the crank.
It sounds to me that when you change gears, that the crank speed decreases rapidly (no revs) and the fuel pump looses pressure.
If possible, stay with the origonal mechanical pump, and don't change it for the electrical type... less hastles on the old mechanical jobs.
See if you can find someone to check it for you first, before you rush out and replace it, it could just be dirty.
Another possibilty is that there is dirt in the fuel lines, a good flogging on the open road can force the dirt out.

Hope this helps
a.k.a. Datsun Dustin

Thanks Dustin I will look at the issues you raised, the sympton you described is spot on. It seems more of an issue early morning when the vehicle is still cold

Goeie dag, askuus.

Hallo Frans

Ek is in Richardsbaai, Kwa Zulu Natal hier in die juweel van Zoeloeland ( selde dorpie as Gerrit )

Ek het my distributor so 3-4 jaar terug vervang met n elektroniese ignition.
