Maxxis- The Good and bad

I have 33' bighorns on my 99 4.2 partol.Had them since new
They are awsome in the wet and just as good offroad.Very good.
They are not as noisy as the other mudders,but they do make a noise.
The car has a very nice ride to it,soft,not so firm as some of the other tyres.
With the maxxis on the patrol you do not feel the car's weight so much through a corner.I corner my car so hard sometime,the inside front wheel picks up,and the maxxis can handle it.
BUT,BUT I just came back from my Namib holiday,I or we drove 4800 kms.I can throw them away they are almost shot.
2000kms of that were on gravel.My speed on the gravel was between 120kph and 130 kph,the car was heavy as well.
No flat tyres.
They wobble or can not get them ballenced,I have tried since they where new.
I need to swop them arround constantley because the thread wore down(heel toe) very quick.
The tyres only did 24000kms on my car and there are 20 persent thread left.
I can not recomend the Maxxis for a patrol,the car is to heavy.
If you can live with a unballanced tyre and only 30000kms the Maxxis are fine,because there is nothing wrong with the grip,but they dont last.

O i must say It sound in the post that I might be hard on a tyre and they can not last,the Maxxis where the most bad tyre I have owned.I am hard on a tyre but out of all my offroad and onroad driving the worst ave kms are allways 50000kms.

Ja...I have to agree with you, also have the Maxxis Bighorn 33's on a 1998 4.2 TD, and I`m very alarmed at how quickly they are wearing out. As you say, no complaints about traction, but Blikzem, I feel like I can see the difference in tread depth each time I go for a drive. I think I might sqeeze about 35 to 40k kms from mine, which is a bit more than you, but still very unsatisfactory!

I bought them because at the time no one had stock of 33" Copper STT`s (and they were a bit cheaper), but I think my next set of takkies will either be Coopers or the new BF KM2.

My next tyre are the same choice than yours,for a little more money you get a mutch better tyre.I had coopers on my previous 4x4 and I was very happy with their outcome.My first choice whould be the KM2's,I would only like to know the outcome of them,since they are new on the market.But there is nothing wrong with the older model BFG's.

there is a direct comparison between threadwear and grip. But I must say 24000km is not good.

Has anyone else had bad experiences with Maxxis with regard to wear/tyre life? Is the bighorns they produce now, the same as the ones in 2010?

Maxxis not cool for km spend a bit extra and get coopers or bf

I replaced my Kumho Muddies with a secondhand set of Maxxi Bighorns that I got from Grant, after he had done a good many Km's on. I have subsequently done 17 000Km on them since fitting them and there is still plenty more Km's to go before they will be worn out. There is NOTHING wrong with the Maxxi Bighorns, they are just a little expensive compared to Kumho's and are harder compound than Kumhos.... I know this cause I have used both these brands !!

I can get Maxxis bighorns for R2760 per tyre. (285/75/r16)
The best price I got on Kumho's was R3243...

At the Nissan Off Road Club year end function, one of the sponsors was Kumho and they say via the Club, we can buy the Kumho's directly from the factory, at a fairly decent price If I recall.

I got about 90 000km from a set of 4 Cooper STTs :D :D
