Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

With camping and exploration missions planned almost every weekend, I have committed to finally getting more organised with my gear and storage. My primary needs are to carry the following:

• 4 x ammo boxes with food, cooking equipment, crockery & cutlery, and recovery gear
  1 x 75 litre cooler box (still haven't managed to purchase an Engel- future treats)
  Camera gear box
  Drone box (or alternatively 2 x ammo boxes when the toys aren't needed).
  Storage of a camping table and a braai grid.
  2 x Jerry cans
  Tent and poles
  2 x chairs
  Bedding

I do have the roof rack for extra space, which is a big bonus. The idea of the storage unit is for it to be removable.
Today is day one of the project. Will post more as I get on. Your suggestions and comments are welcome. Biggest worry is the weight- but snag is, I am in the middle of nowhere; no aluminium etc.

Good luck with the build, I am also planning to do so at some stage, luckily alu is available for me. Keep up with updates, and this thread is useless without pictures...

Thanks Oetie, battled with the image process! hopefully it is showing now. Fabricating some square tubing for a lighter frame at the moment. Should be back from the boilermaker tomorrow (hopefully).

I like those injection moulded storage boxes in the pic ! Looks similar to Plano cases I have.

Other option when Alu and steel is not available, is to use plywood!

Wood is actually a very under-rated material, as long as you can keep it dry. This should be fairly easy in a packing system for an SUV.

My only issue wit it is that you have to use fairly thick sections, which uses up space, but whether or not this is a problem depends on just how much you are trying to squeeze in there.

Glass fibre, while a real bastard to work with, is also relatively strong for it's weight.

Hundred percent agree with you. Fiberglass would be ideal, but i would rather have someone else go through the suffering Because I am going to be using the boxes, I am not going to include drawers but rather shelves. Waiting on news from the boiler maker. Should be close. Heading to Liuwa Plains National Park this weekend, so some final prepping to go.

A few days in (been a hassle trying to resource just a few pieces of square tubing and angle iron) and here is the frame work. Things continue today, and hopefully all finished by the end of the day. Surprisingly, the frame is very light so far and robust.
