This is very difficult to answer !!! Both vehicles can be good and both could be bad. The 2007 if it doesn't have an EGT gauge of some sort fitted, then you don't know what the inside of the motor looks like...... however having said that, if you are a little handy and they give you a better deal price wise then park the Patrol, open up the motor check the piston tops, replace or service the injectors ( +/- R 450 each) and fit a new GENUINE NISSAN head gasket ( +/- R 2000 ) and then you know have a motor that will last many many Km. If the pistons look a little knackered, and the sleeves are still perfect, then there is nothing easier than to buy Pistons and rings from a 2.7 diesel Hardbody, you just need 2 extra, and it will be identical parts, and will be cheaper !!! Same with the big end bearings if I'm not mistaken. I would also put a new thermostat and GENUINE NISSAN antifreeze/coolant.
You will then have a brand NEW patrol now.....
In fact I would probably do that on both of those Patrols, purely for piece of mind. There could be nothing wrong with these motors, but at least then you know everything is 100%
How long has the aftermarket turbo been installled on option (a)?
True what Cedric sayd about the EGT.
I would go for the 2008 model. TD from start, so you know the pistons are made to last the turbo.
Slightly cheaper - after negotiating on price.
And mileage means nothing on these donkeys. So 199k versus 185k is not the issue. More so the aftermarket turbo. Could be good, but you do not know.
Alex my friend ..... you hit the hammer on the thumb !!! Its a chance you take ..... could be good, could be bad, but these motors are damn strong and can take abuse, but like anything in life, if you abuse and neglect it..... even a petrol engine for that matter, you can land up with a horrible repair bill.
