Does anyone know what the legal implication is with respect to one's insurance and liability when safety systems such a brakes (or brake pads) are modified.

My understanding is that if an incident occurs and they find proof that it was due to such a modified component they will not cover the cost. But they have to prove that the incident occurred due to that component. Same applies in the case if there is an incident due to worn brake pads/tyres.
