Gutless Patrol
Hi guys, just got back from a 2000km round trip to Pburg and Kruger (first long trip I have done in the Troll!) I must say I was very disappointed with my 4500 Gu on the open road, if it is flat 120 130kmh is not a problem but as soon as I hit a long uphill I drop down to 100kmh and if I gear down to 4th I get the revs up but no more power. (on some of the long uphills I was down to 80kmh in 3rd with the revs screeming) It was also a pain in the butt overtaking 18 wheelers on the single track roads as the acceleration is just not there! I don't mind paying the fuel bill R4500 for the 2000km but is this normal on the 4500 I would have thought with 4500 cc I would be flying up and down the hills, Had a few 4500 cruisers come flying past me up the hills? Is there anything I can do to get more power out of this motor or is something up with my patrol?

Re: Gutless Patrol
Hi Ian
I had the same problem with my 4.5. I changed the petrol pump and it is much better now. I accelerate up hills I had to gear down on. Take it to Graham. He will be able to assist you. I changed my petrol pump myself and it cost me about R450 if I can remember right.

Re: Gutless Patrol
Thanks guys, have you got a number for him, I know he is in PTA, what about (I think it is ) Ben on the West Rand (hell of a lot closer for me) Now that you are talking about the fuel pump I did hear it humming when I turned on the ignition this morning. What should I expect out of the 4500 should I be able to be going up a long hill at 120 and still be able to accelerate?

Re: Gutless Patrol
I drive like a granny for fuel saving, but if I put my foot down I can still accelerate. I drove up Oliviershoek pass about 3 weeks back and could do it at 120km/h if I wanted to. You will run into trouble on very steep passes like the ones in Lesotho, but you will feel a big difference in the car. Maybe contact Jorrie and ask who he used to do his. He did his pump just after I did mine. Maybe you can arrange a GTT and feel his cars power.

Re: Gutless Patrol
Ian, I'd bet money its probably not getting enough fuel. When last was the fuel filter changed? If you don't know, then try that first. May just be blocked with crud. Next thing I would suspect would be the fuel pump.

Re: Gutless Patrol
Thanks guys, I was serviced just before we left, so all filters and plugs are new, was using about 16 to 18 Litres per 100 on this trip, Ok think I will change the fuel pump and if I don't come right send it through to Graeham

Re: Gutless Patrol
While I suspect there is an 80% chance that the fuel pump is the culprit, I am generally anti just replacing stuff without having tested to ensure that I am replacing the right component.
Graham has the tools to check first. I doubt Ben has them, but I could be doing the man a disservice.
