Powerbrake rear disc for Patrol

Post by mvcoller »

Hi all,

The rear discs that Powerbrake (http://www.powerbrake.co.za) had made up for me arrived last week and I fitted them in about 15 minutes flat per side. They were not really interested initially, but once the technical manager heard that there was no handbrake drum to worry about and that it was purely a disc, they agreed to get them for me and then make them available to all. Their discs are really hightech, finished really well, sandblasted to look a dull silver, have cleaning/cooling grooves and are sided, ie the left and right hand side discs are not to be interchanged because of the grooves.

I can't really comment on their effacacy, as the old one on the left hand side was really shot. It was only 14mm thick and the back of it was really badly pitted and scored. Standard rear discs are only 18mm thick. If you think that these are vented discs, you realise that the disc material is actualy very thin.

Well, Powerbrake now have rear discs for the GQ Patrol in stock or at least in their catalogue and you can order a set for yourself. They were couriered to my house at a cost in the region of R2320 for the set. It excluded the cost of Pads, as 1, they had no high performance rear pads in stock yet (they plan to get them) and 2, I bought a new set of Bendix 4x4 offroad heavy duty Aussie pads from Brake and Clutch in Randburg in October. I only did about 200km on those pads with the old discs.

I also at last managed to get a km/h speedo cluster. I bought one from Dawid in Bela Bela from a diesel Patrol. The warning lights differed and their layout differed too. For one, my petrol engine does not have glowplugs. Instead of trying to fix this, I took the 2 clusters to Reef Instruments in Von Willigh street in Jhb to build the rev counter and KM/h speedo unit into my unit (which included the odo).

The reason why I did both rev counter and speedo is because their markings are in yellow and mine are in white. Now at least my two main units are the same colour (yellow) and the minor ones are in white. While Mike was doing the building over of the rev counter, he also altered if form from a six cylinder to and eight cylinder unit to work with the V8 in the nose of the Patrol. Until now I was running a small 50mm diameter unit on the dash.

It amazed me that both the Petrol and Diesel Patrol rev counters read to 6000 RPM. The Petrol 4.2 6 cyl redline is at 4500RPM, whereas the Diesel 4.2 6 cyl rededline is only 250RPM earlier at 4250RPM.
The petrol speedo runs to 140mph (240kph) ha, ha, ha and the diesel unit reads to 180kph

So, if someone wants a mph speedo for their GQ Diesel Patrol, speak to me

Regards

Malcolm

FYI, on later models (4.8) they rear disk has a drum part, they handbrake was changed from the prop to the rear wheels.
