Oiling your box

Yesterday evening I frustrated myself endlessly trying to put new oil in my trollie's gearbox.

I don't know if it's just me, but it seems the modern gearbox oil bottles are really badly made. Every time I squeezed the bottle to get the oil out, I got an armfull of oil as the oil squirted past the tube instead of through it, and each time I made a wrong move the tube pulled out of the bottle.

As I was removing the second bottle from the gearbox, the tube pulled out of the bottle and promptly fell into the gearbox.

To retrieve it, I had to pull the drainplug (and thus waste two bottles of oil), and fortunately I then managed to hook it over the hole with a bent piece of bailing wire and could then drag it out with long-nosed pliers, but by that time I had soiled several pairs of underpants with thoughts of having to pull the gearbox...

Anyway, I think that I have found the answer. I stopped by the local model shop on the way home this afternoon, and R150 later I walked away with a hand-crancked pump such as the modelers use to pump nitro fuel into their planes and cars, and a metre of pipe. Upon getting home I then heated a bottle of gearbox oil by putting it in hot water, and the pump pumps it beautifully!

Just thought I'd share the tip.

Peter, that is a brilliant solution. I have one of those pumps, and since I only fly electric these days, it is sitting idle.

I've had that experience that you mentioned with these stupid little bottles you just manage to press to pieces.

Boer maak 'n plan daar! Watter tipe olie het jy die keer gebruik, weer die Castrol BOT130? Was dit weer tyd gewees om die olie te ruil of het jy geruil vir ander redes?

.... Peter.... I know exactly how you feel....I did mine with much swearing and then started having visions of oil wrestling..... but moving on.....

I landed up feeding a fairly large diameter clear hose from bonnet height in the engine bay down into the box, and poured the oil through a funnel into the pipe...... took a loooooooooong time to feed into the box.... and then had the battle to take the pipe out the box with the minimal spillage of oil still in the pipe....not one of my best days.....

BOT 130M is nou vervang in Castrol se reeks deur Syntrans Multivehicle. Ek het dit gebruik. Teen omtrent 25k km was dit oortyd as jy volgens die Y60 sy specs gaan (20k km) maar nog nie naastenby die Y61 se 100k km nie, en dis veronderstel om dieselfde ratkas te wees. Die grootste rede is egter dat 5de rat se syncro begin deurgly as die kar warm is, en ek het gedink dis dalk die olie, maar hy doen dit nog steeds. Ek sal bly wees as Gerrit dalk vir ons kan verduidelik of sy probleem dieselfde was.

I usually wait for my brother to visit before I attemp these jobbies, but certainly a very usefull and cost effective solution!

@Peter, thanks for another good contribution - we should club together and get you a PEP Stores voucher for those soiled underpants.

@Traveler, if your pump that is sitting idle is a problem I'll take it off ou hands..

Lastly, if you require sawdust or wood shavings for cleaning up, let me know I can sell you cheap-cheap (as I am not allowed to take anything out of the company yard, it must be sold for at least some value to be able to create the release/delivery note...)
