Ladder for Roof Rack.

Hi Guys, I am looking for some advise, drawings, pictures or photos of a permanent ladder, either mounted on the rear door or side (?) of the vehicle. I bought a nice second hand roof rack for my 1996 GQ and planning on mounting the rooftop tent in front of the rack with the tent's ladder being supported by the bullbar - making it difficult to climb into the tent from the front. The idea is to use the ladder for permanent access onto the roof rack and into the tent. Where and how do I fix it to the body work and is the door hinges and catches strong enough or do I need to beef them up?

Hello David
I have seen ladders mounted onto the "small" door of several 76 Cruisers, but am a bit concerned about the strength of this door. I have also seen several different itarations of a set of steps that attach to the spare wheel via a ratchet strap. Usually the steps are on the side of the wheel.
I also have designed a ladder that folds up to be a relatively narrow but long section. This can be attached to the side of the roofrack and then fold down:

In my case, it just clips onto the roofrack, as I have found it usefull in camp and even around the house.

Thanks Peter, never thought of this. Seeing that in a couple of years when my old GQ retires, I can swing the roof rack to the new vehicle without permanent holes in the badywork.
Baie dankie!!!

Dawid, please send me your e-mail (again?).
Cedric, I used mild steel and galvanized it. Not only cheaper, but easier to work with. Stainless would probably be the "ideal" material for this one though, but it's more difficult to find the square tubing that the legs are made from, and more difficult to weld (the steps are made in two pieces which are welded together).

Peter, are you making any of these ladders any time again? I wouldn't mind one for my roof-rack at some point if you do.
Cheers,
Clem

David, Peter's ladder looks great. I was not aware of it when I did mine. So I bought one from frontrunner for R1200. And I just fitted it myself. I did not have a grommet tool. But installed it using a bolt with a lock nut. You can google this. There is some great video's on how to install the ladder. It is aluminium powder coated.
