Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

My 4.5 Patrol's clutch gave up this past weekend and is currently stranded 300km away from home in Vredendal. The Mechanic there who is replacing the clutch said there was silicone applied everywhere when he took out the gearbox and found it strange. Having done some reading and finding some content on the AUS site it appears standard practice to apply Silicone between the bellhousing and the engine to waterproof the assembly. Apparently it is even part of the Service Manual. Can anyone confirm or elaborate on this? With the car now not being at a Patrol specialist (Not trying to insult the repairer by any means as everyone there highly recommends him) I am just trying to source whatever info I can to try and ensure this is done correctly. I am having OEM parts fitted.

I've never heard of this but i'll check my Max Ellery manual and report back if i find this topic in there.

Sems to be true! Nissan's electronic service manual shows that sealant must be placed on the dust cover of the withdrawal lever, as well as the mating surfaces between the transmission and the engine.
I remember seeing a rubber seal/grommet at the bottom of the bellhousing that you can remove to drain any water that might have made its way inside...

Seems we have the same manual. I saw that as well but not being very mechanically capable I was not sure if I was interpreting in 100%. I will just make sure to let the mechanic know he must apply silicone the way he found it. Seems to also have been common practice on the VW Syncro's

Be careful here boys, i just noticed, marked in the top corner of the diagram, that this is the FSR30A box,which i believe was only used with the RD28 motor. As far as im aware, and according to my manual, All TB42,TB45,ZD30,TD42 models made use of the FSR50B box. And i cant find any literature on Sealant in regard to the 50B box.

Maybe just check if you can find the 50B box on that Electronic Service manual first.

Here is what I find for the 50B. Also spoke to Alleric in Stikland who also confirms the use of silicone if you are someone that is likely to do water crossings.

Just spoke to my mate at atlantis nissan sealing of bellhousing and bits are standard on all patrols not just for water but dust too

My gearbox has just been replaced by Nissan under warranty, but installed by the firm they outsource all the gearbox work to - Mayfair Gearbox. I better check that this was done. Is there any way of seeing if it was done myself (Ie: Visual of the sealant itself), or would it be hidden, meaning i will have to rely on them to say yes they dod it or no they did not.

Some where must be a bit showing on the outside or even dust sticking to where it was cleaned up?????
Just pull your starter that shoud give you a visual if done or not and easy to replace again ????
