2009 Patrol 4.8 GRX - proper mud flaps

Post by Adamastor »

Hi there

Where can I start looking for a set of proper mud flaps for my "bostrollie"?
The bits of plastic they recon are mud flaps, can under no circumstances stop the stuff kicked up by the tyres....
The rear bumper feels like SWAMBO's cheese grater already

Asked the local agent and they came back with a price of R1 000 a piece for the 4 - surely this is not right!

when you are going on that trip i would use a soft conveyer or a rubber mat that you can pick up at midas cut to fit and put in place with a couple of big fender washers and rif nuts that will keep the stones of your caravan and then take them of when you get home . remember to fit a piece of chain to stop it from going under the tire when you reverse in sand it will cost mabe R100 and will do the job the ones from the stealers are not going to protect our caravan :mytwocents:

I agree with Tinus, I made flaps with a 5mm rubber sheeting ( the one with cotton reinforcing ) purchased from Outdoor warehouse . You buy it by the meter, add a length of galvanised chain to hook up the flaps if reversing in sand or up rocks / kerbs etc. Also if they get damaged they are easy to replace. just remember to measure the length of the flaps to that they do not drag on the road when the Trol is loaded and the caravan/trailer connected. Very easy to make , you need a stanley knife and pop rivets.

I really struggled to get proper mudflaps for the Patrol and in the end bought a rear set in Malaysia.

I think it is very easy to make, as described by Babelaas.
I used poprivets to attached mine to the rear bumper and it works fine.

I think mine is currently a bit short, but I can just move it down a bit.

I will take a closer photo and post it.

I made long mudflaps with 5 or 6mm rubber sheets to use for a trip to Namibia. They were 400mm wide and 500mm long.
I attached them by using the lower 3 screwholes in the fender. I used longer bolts with big washers on the fenders and the inside of the I attached with cable ties (at the rear left side I used a hole close to the exhaust hanger and on the right side I put cable ties around the chassis and attached it to the flap with more cable ties, in the front I attached the cable ties to the stabilizer bolts). I didn't have chains on it but fortunately I didn't reverse in thick sand which could have caused problems. We drove 7000km and didn't have any problems with the flaps.
These are the best photos I have of the flaps, unfortunately you can't see the bolts, washers and cable ties on the photos.
