Alternator Bearings

I have now sorted out the major source of rough sounding engine - it was the aircon belt tensioner pulley bearing.
A very easy 20 min DIY job with a R20 bearing from Midas, thanks to the advice of Andries and Grootseun in my last post on this matter.
When originally trying to identify the source of the noise I also noticed a lesser second source comming from my alternator front bearing and while in the mood I think I will also have these bearings replaced - can this be a DIY?
Removing the Alt is simple, but what about opening and replacing bearings??
Does anyone have any advice on this, or better to take to a professional.

Chris, glad you got it sorted
I posted under the Patrol reference the various belt sizes and part numbers you required earlier. The v-belt can definitely be sourced from somebody other than Nissan but I don't know about the other belts? Let us know the part numbers if you used non-genuine spares

Chris which alternator have you got on there - if its the bosch if yes its an easy job as follows
Pull it off , take of the regulator first so you dont brake the brushes when you split it in two by loosening 4 bolts , leave the stator and diodes intact , clamp the rotor gently in a vice and renove the nut that holds the pulley ( if its a clutch pulley youll need a special tool )
Now press the rotor out and carefull not to brake the drive end bracket , use a bearing seperator to pull the rear bearing off , if memory serves me youre gonna need a 6303 and 6201 bearing , replace and reassemble
If it the Hitachi alternator - similar process but the regulator is build in so no need to remove , youll need the bearings as samples there though as Hitachi takes non standard bearings ( bearing specilist dont even bother with midas ) - just be carefull when you reassemble , theres a small hole in the back bracket stick a thin hard wire throught that and past the brushes to lolck them in place so you dont brake them off when putting the two halves together
Hope this helps , if you struggle give me a shout its not rocket science but needs some patience and knowledge does help

Grootseun, I got the thing out and stripped, no problem, but getting the bearings off is a bit more of a challenge without right tools.
Brute force will probably result in some unnecessay secondary damage...
Can I bring it over to you sometime in next day or so.
Send me your number in a PM and I will call you.
