Long Range Fuel Tank

Post by Jorrie »

Where would I find the best deal on a good long range fuel tank for my 1998 4500E GRX? Any ideas? All inputs will be appreciated.

Jorrie please note that Northern Offroad sells a stainless tank, whith which a number of this forum's members have had problems.

You can also try Silverton radiators in Krugersdorp. My car has long range tanks which I beleive were made by them. I am not sure though, as they were fitted by a previous owner.

Big Country will also make you a fuel tank. Not sure if they only use stainless though. I have stainless and imho not the ideal material when it comes to holding > 100litres of fuel.

I think most problems with tanks come with the way that they are supported eg with straps in cradle or just angle brakets wilfret went all the way to tanzania and back lesoto ect with no problems so that plan works :mytwocents:

Hi,

As Thinus said, I had my tank made by LA Sport in Centurion. They sub-contract a guy that custom make these tanks. It is from a special type of stainless steel that don't crack easily.

I think one important thing on fuel tanks is not to go too big. I kept my original tank (95L) and added another one of 73L.

The extra tank does not have brackets welded on, the tank lies in a harness which is bolted onto the chassi.
The extra tank has a pump that you then uses to pump the fuel to the main tank. So two filler caps, you only use the main tank for day to day driving.

So far no problems and I have driven some pretty bad roads, including the serengeti which is a nightmare for extras on a vehicle.

Hi Wilfred, did you replace the 40l subtank with the 73l one? How much did that cost?

I have a 99 4.5 GRX, so no sub tank, the 73L tank was custom made to fit in the place of the sub tank!!

I paid R2500 for everything, fitted ext.
