Need help manne!!

Post by Langman »

I am seriously contemplating trading in my 2003 3.0 Manual for a later model but no it starts getting complicated...Ek wik en weeg so tussen petrol en diesel  Ek moet met n' budget koop want ek het vir my vrou 3 maande terug n' nuwe chorra gekoop so ek kyk hier om en by R200-R250K (kan seker nog so bietjie oor...) vir my speelding.

As iemand weet waar so 3.0 D staan laat my weet my, as iemand my wil oortuig om die petrol te koop probeer maar gerus.

Langman if I may ask why do you want to change?

I don't know whether you drive your Patrol daily, or only play with it, but let me share a sum with you:
I am currently planning a trip to Bots for early next year. The basic trip is JHB, Martin's Drift, Kubu, Maun, Moremi, Savuti, Linyanti, Kasane, Palapye and back to JHB. Total trip distance is 3125km (this does not include game drives, but they are normally inconsequential). Total trip cost is estimated at R21 295.07 for my family of four in my 4.2 Patrol (which is heavier on fuel than my friend Tinus's 4.8). My estimated trip cost in a 3l Patrol would have been R19 133.68, so a saving of only R2 161.39

This does not include the maintenance or depreciation on the vehicle, but I beleive the long-term maintenance on the Diesel is more than on the Petrol.

I think that if you change, you will lose on the deal unless you are very lucky, but if it was me and I had to change, I would be going for a 4.8. :mytwocents:

Thanks Peter appreciated and you are one of many to prompt me into the direction of the 4.8 but what do you think on the mileage issue on the models out there? My 3.0 D has 215K km's on it so I would not do an injustice to myself by getting something with more or less same mileage, especially considering it is a petrol motor. Do you think that R200-R250 K for a 2005 model with this mileage is ok price?

Dit was vir my nogal nuus. Groete

Langman because this is more than double the kind of money I have ever been able to afford to spend on a car, I don't really keep tabs on the prices of 4.8s.

However my feeling (mostly based on my reading on this forum) is that a 4.8 motor should do about double the mileage of a 3l diesel before it requires expensive repair. Most of the cars I have owned have had in excess of 250k km on when I bought them, and although I have often had to do fairly comprehensive work on them, they have always worked out cheaper to own than a new car with similar specs.

Having said that though, one has to be careful to ensure that the car has not been abused, has not been in a significant accident and that it has been thoroughly maintained (not necesarily by dealers). Also know that on older cars, the electronics (like radios, windows air con switches etc.) do tend to start niggling, so test them all carefully. This is particularly true if the vehicle has been used extensively on corrugated roads.

well.... on a different note....you could sell your 3.0 D and take on a 4.2 D with aftermarket turbo.... with less Km and reasonable fuel consumption.... and only 3 years older (2000)......
