Patrol info wanted
Hi I am interested in the patrol between 1998-2005. Which model is the best vaule. What do you think about the 3.0 TD?
Any suugestion on buying, what must I look for. What problems do these vehicles have. What is the service and spare prices?
What is the fuelconsumption?
Any input will be welcome.
Sorry for all the questions.
Thanks
Zebraas

Howzit Zebraas!
Welcome and good luck with your hunt!
There are quite a couple of Patrol Professors on the forum (
) that will hopefully give you proper info.
In the mean time I will give you my limited and non-technical 2cents woth:
I have a 1999 4.5 GRX that I bought 6 years ago with 100 000km on clock for R160 000. I suppose I will get maybe R140 - 150 000 now if I want to sell it (which I dont)
I use it on holidays (towing dbl axle caravan & boat in tandem) and weekend when all the kids (4 sometimes 5) drives with.
Maintenance cheap. Had one or two water pipes (pre heater on f/i & heater pipe) burst with no effect and most pipes where replaced.
Normal maintenance in the very affordable category (fiited a set of brake pads all round about two years ago - R900 vat incl!)
Very cheap (except fuel) to run, huge space, best old school looks, absolutely bulletproof transmission (rated to tow 3.2 tonnes)
I love but remember I am very biased

Re: Patrol info wanted
Oh yes - I get about 4.6 kms to litre in town, between 5 and 6 on open road and when towing the "roadtrain" I get about 4.2 kms per litre!

Re: Patrol info wanted
Zebraas I strongly recommend spending a couple of days reading through all the stuff in the Patrol Passion section of this forum. That will give you answers to virtually all your questions, and more.
The 3l is the lightest of all the patrols on fuel, and you should easily get 8km/l. I have a friend who gets closer to 9. However the 3l is also probably the most expensive to maintain, and the only one where there is really any risk of large damage-control bills (of course any machine can be broken by an idiot). In particular be carefull of pre-2003 3l Patrols. If I were looking to buy a 3l, I would definately prefer to find one with an EGT gauge already fitted, as this shows that the previous owner was carefull with it.
The 4.2 N/A Diesel is probably a better off-roader, and is virtually bullet proof. Be a little bit carefull of 4.2 Turbos, as they were never officially imported into SA. therefore you are probably looking at an aftermarket turbo, which may be good or bad. The petrol patrols are all pretty reliable, but thirsty (it is often said that the fuel consumption is written on the door). But that power does marvelous things when the going gets tough.
This may be stating the obvious, but in any older vehicle the history is probably more important than the actual distance covered. A decent service history is worth a considerable amount of money. As always, check chassis for straightness and body for putty, and ensure that everything works properly (in the case of the patrol, definately check that the diff lock engages and disengages properly).

FOR SALE: 2002 Patrol 3.0 Di GRX - Automatic. Km: 232 000 - OME Suspension, New B/stone Dueller A/T Tyres; Red & gold; Leather seats; engine overhauled 3 000 km ago by Steves Auto Clinic - dieselpump being replaced due to ENGEN garage putting water contaminated diesel in the tank - Radio & 6-shuttle CD - Red & gold.
EGT [Madman] fitted; and you can speak to his mechanic at SAC -
Reason for selling? Too many 4x4 in my yard - dont have place for all and cant afford all 4. If you ask nicely, the ORYX Caravan can be sold with the Patrol [then the Oryx price will come down]

Re: Patrol info wanted
I am not a diesel fan and therefore I would advise you to get a petrol Patrol 4,5 or 4,8 - it just show that I am biased!!!
But in any case - if you get a Patrol you will be happy!!!

Re: Patrol info wanted
Advantage with Agarob - The engine is still under guarantee; the service book is complete up to date [missed one service in all its life] - so you are safe from "handgranade" experience for many many years & miles to come ...

Re: Patrol info wanted
Zeeeeeeeeeeee
I agree with Peter. 4.2's are bullet proof. I have GQ 96 4.2 Diesel with a Safari Turbo, and with 370k on the clock with no problems. Search for Emerentia motors. I know they have a Patrol 4.5 that is pricey, but in very good condition.
The 4.2, 4.5 & 4.8's are all bullet proof, both in diesel and petrol. If you go for a Diesel, have the compression tested as well as the turbo and fuel pump checked. Also get confirmation of when the injectors were changed. At 250k + you might also have to look at the clutch.
