4.2 diesel over 400 000km

Post by OB1 »

Would you buy this one? 408k km Patrol 4.2 diesel selling for R130k
http://search.autotrader.co.za/www/cars ... 0187663209

That is far travelled. I am going to try and contact the previous owner just to try and find out what type of KMs he put on. No lift/steel nose, it must have been longer distances, not tree climbing and trails etc...

OB1 I always maintain that on a car that old the age and distance are less important than usage and service history.

If it hasn't been abused and has been properly serviced regularly, then ther should still be plenty of life left in the beast. If it were me, I would make sure that everything works, the chassis is straight, there is no body putty or rust and perhaps do a compression test?

However I do think the price is perhaps on the high side. I would have thought R100k to be closer to the mark?

Hi OB1,

Have the compression tested as well as the condition of the injectors checked. I agree with Peter that you should not pay more than R 100K for the vehicle. Often with vehicles on high millage the previous owner skimps on the maintenance toward the end, or before he trades it in.

I looked at that yesterday online. Price is too high for km , however, non turbo patrols fetch alot of money, people are prepared to pay.

There is another one on gumtree through, with far less km (280 000 i think) , selling for around the same price, also Normally aspirated - have a look.

There's also a GQ 4.2d but something puts me off it. (i think its the "naughty by nature" sticker on the front wind screen!). selling for around 60k.

Spoke to the seller. First owner was based in Austria, bought it to do long distance trips from SA to Nam that is why there was a lot of kms on it, at least it is long distance. Second owner was the friend of the first, same sort of mileage. Only towed a trailer for overlanding.

According to the guy at Flora Motors no blow by when you open the oil cap, and serviced to spec at RMI place.

I still think it is too much, but if the history is accurate and true, it might be a good find. Even if the motor packs up in 50k km, replacing it/ overhauling should not be too expensive?

What about the drivetrain?
