Gear, transfer and diff oil service

Post by davejones »

Replaced the gear, transfer and diff oil this weekend.

Man I struggled with the little 500ml bottles. I started at about 7pm on Friday and only finished by 10pm.... maybe I was doing something I could have done in an easier way... any way the details are:

Gear oil: Castrol BOT 130M - and it has made a proper difference, so so smooth

Transfer: Read so much differing views of ATF versus GL-4 gear oil. In the end, after purchasing both ATF (Castrol PTS TQD III... which is supposedly a premium synthetic )and extra GL-4, I went with the same the Castrol BOT 130M as well. I heard from a few different sources that Castrol Transmax Z ATF is a good replacement for the Nissan Matic D ATF that is often used.... anyway we'll see how it goes; should I start to hear any clunking from my front diffs then I'll go back to ATF (which I think was in there to begin with judging my its different colour and texture to the other oils I drained).

Diffs: I used Castrol EPX 80w90 GL-5 for front and back (is there a better oil?).... funnily I think I only used 5 x 500ml for the rear diff before it started overflowing... i was expecting to use 6, unless I counted wrong.

So only things I have to do are the greasing along the prop shaft, repacking the front bearings (having second thoughts about doing the bearings on my own), and check the cooling system (probably though silvertons).

Swambo was judging me the other day... i cant remember the last time i went to the dentist but my Patrol gets a check up almost weekly!!! :rolling:

hahaha, the best is to heat up the oil in the microwave just a bit, so its runny, it makes it quick and easy to pour in. next time.
