Frans had a look...

Its leaking from the top shaft seal as the shaft has play in in, so obviously the seal cannot cope with any movement.

Frans has his old pump there, same as mine, so i asked him to give me a price for it, including removal and fitment in and out of my truck.
His one has similar milage to mine,about 250 000km, so im still concerned its seals give problems soon after fitment,specailly cause its been sitting , but what can i do, ... i'll wait on a price from him and take it from there. thoughts?

Would it not be an easy task to let him replace the seals in his pump just incase, and then simply drive in and swap the IP over. His cost to buy 2 seal kits so that he can then replace the seal on your ( which will now be his ) pump will surely still work out cheaper than the Bosch option, and its a win win situation for both parties. Although I forgot that there will be some repair work needed for the shaft play. But you then have a pump that you know is good for at least another 250 000Km. And it could probably be done super quick to prevent not having a vehicle for a day or 2.

Does his pump not have the aneroid ( compensator ) on it for a turbo setup?

What caused the shaft to wear to get play on it??

I have got the same problem with my pumos shaft...... its not leaking yet, but it has some play on it.

Hopefully it will last a bit longer

Have you got a pic of this wiggly shaft? I'm not quite sure what it looks like to even check to see in my shaft wiggles..... I mean the injector pumps shaft...

basic wear and tear due to millions of cam cable revolutions. I use my Truck every day in CT traffic... not just long drives like many patrols out there, so it sees alot more turns on that shaft i suppose.

Frans would have to take the pump in anyways as it would need to be opened to get the seals in and that needs to be done in a dust free temp controlled room according to him. which i can understand.

It would be ideal to do a seal kit on his before it goes onto my motor , but there again, Bosch will charge around 3k for that alone. Will wait to see what he wants to charge me for the job and maybe i can still do a seal kit. will see.

When my 2,7's pump went in the same way, it ate the insides to bits. Total rebuild was basically R4K. I removed the pump and installed it back when it returned.

Most of the job is basic till the time came to set the timing. I don't have the tools to measure where it's at. So I just bashed it in and kinda got it back to where it was. Power is down, and it smokes a bit at heavy throttle. I think I am retarded (the pump )... I need to advance it, but don't know by how much. I was once told that a diesel it easy to set up, just like it's petrol counterparts, you advance it till you start getting knock, then turn it back slightly .

I would probably have done it this way, if I did not feel so darn bad for the motor when it knocks. It sounds absolutely awful and I get the feeling it can not be any good in any way.

My injectors are now at 170K km, and I have that puffy white start up on most starts. But now I must admit that my trokkie has not had a service since August 2014 and has done around 600 hours. I need to get to it as it's starting to gain oil volume in the sump. I presume it's diesel passing the rings.

David, the only way to check the timing properly is via a dial gauge at the back of the pump. You will nedd a special adaptor which van be made in your garage.
There is a size 12 bolt in the centre between your four injector pipes which you remove, you then insert the special tool and the dial gauge to measure the pump lift (pump timing)

On the TD42 the pump lift must be 0.76mm @ tdc, not sure what the 2.7 is

Ja well I'm stuffed with that one. Will need to take it somewhere to have it done
