Hi Russ,
The method that we used to resurrect SRXy`s LSD was based on extensive research, and input obtained from the Aussie Patrol site. SRXy is overseas on business at the moment, but may still have the links to the specific posts saved somewhere...I`ll ask him when he gets back. Otherwise a bit of seaching on the Aussie site will probably unearth something similar to what I have outlined below:
Basically the method we followed was as follows:
1. Drain existing std diff oil, and refill diff with Paraffin.
2. Drive
slowly to a parking area about 100m down the road and drive in circles (did approx 20 in each direction). The idea of this is to make the diff do some work, and to scrub up the friction plates. Note: The idea is to do this a lowish speed, not burnouts or doughnuts!!!
3. Drive slowly back to SRXy`s garage, drain paraffin, and re-fill with fresh paraffin and repeat step 2.
4. Drain paraffin again, flush diff with more parafin, allow to air dry for a few hours with both plugs removed, then refill with Castrol LSX
5. After approx 500km, Drain and Replace
6. By this Stage the LSD was back in action, and improved further over the next few weeks of driving with the correct oil.
Not sure how much mileage he has done since then, but its over two years ago since we did it and the only after effect is a working LSD.

thanks Ross,
I have also read a hellova lot of similar stories on the Auzzie Patrol site. I have opted to fill with LSx, will drive for a few hundred km then drop. i may still go through the paraffin process as you described. I wanna do this properly and get this thing back on track. Its amazing how there are no reports of seals being eaten by the chemical.

Very useful information, especially since I successfully managed to get water in both of my diffs. They work fine after an oil change, but still, this procedure may come in handy soon.

The other one i've read about and favoured by the Auzzie's is this.
drain normal oil and replace with LSD oil.
Take out 25% of oil using a syringe and add 25% engine flush
Drive for 100km (include some tight circles)
Drain, replace with LSD oil, drive 1000km
drain and finally replace LSD oil for the last time with the very best oil (R269 per litre in South africa)

And that still beats the price of a DIFFLOCK - handsdown ...
Maybe someone can trace where we can group buy the correct LSD oil [should be some kind of discount ? -- what with the price of fuel and all an' all?]

I can arrange a discounted COD price on the best LSD oil in the country should anyone require it. I made this contact by going through SOS oil in Cape town and talking to Freddy, he is an amazing man, incredibly knowledgeable on oils and differentials and what is needed, a real student of the trade, which a rear find. If there's something you want to know about oils and where they are suited to your patrol, call him. He is the Technical Manager at SOS direct and is worth the phone call. He will also send you , right away, all information via email regarding the oils in question, just for peace of mind.
Ps: This LSD oil is over R300 Per litre, i think my truck worked out at R1680 for my rear diff. But he reckons this thing has your diff binding up in no time.

Brasso? Are you serious?
Not that it matters as I have never seen anything like Brasso where I live. LSD oil is pretty common, though.
