Thanks fellas for the quick responses.
The engine sound seems more "clickish", like metal-to-metal then the clunk sound of other diesels td42 I listened to. It's like going down the rabbit hole when trying to diagnose sounds and using google.
The suspension sound is from the top fronts when relaxing from being compressed.
The coolant was green.
Strong ride. Felt solid like my fj80 same class so it's in my comfort zone.
Will keep you updated.

The "clickish" sound is probably just the rocker clearances as explained by Cedric in his last post.
The suspension sound will possibly be:
1: Swaybar links.
2: The steering arm thing. I can never remember if that is the pitman arm or the draglink. Or whatever.
3: Dodgy shock.
Check the ball-joints on the swaybar links, pitman arm and draglink for play. Also check the bushes on the swaybar.
Good news that the coolant has colour, as that means that the cooling system has been properly maintained.
Let us know how it pans out.

There is a thread on this forum from dustin turboing a td42 which subsequently cracks a piston after he sells it to micheal. On page ten on the thread a video of the engine idling is exactly how the engine I am looking at sounds. Nobody comments on the sound, but it clearly doesn't seem proper.
Can confirm this is just the td42? Worries me.

Worth opening that rocker cover and setting the valve clearances before you worry....it's laborious but not overly complicated.
Just get a new rocker cover seal as the one coming out will most likely struggle to properly seal again. Do not overtighten and ensure even downword pressure build on the seal all round....me have that T shirt
Then a compression test before putting back all the stuff in the way. (Would be a cold pressure test I know...)
At around 700K km mine was clicking/clapping very loud, so much that it would draw attention from other motorists on the road! I set clearances - piston 3 was way out particularly on the exhaust valve side. Compression test revealed all in spec around 31Bar. She is much quieter since then But yes the TD42 is not a silent runner.....
Note mine is stock standard non turbo

If so then no, that's about how these things sound when cold.
After a couple of blocks of driving, it should quite down quite a bit.

Took a trip to lake taal. Worked well. Couldn't make it up steep grade (14deg) paved road in 2wd. Dropped in 4low, second gear@ 2k rpm and boom climbed easily.
Shes need some attention but all hoses, belts, fluids and tires are good.
Trying to sort the headlamps. The battery was bouncing around so i strapped it with some wire. In the process knicked the bat terminal and sparks flew. Then the headlamps were not working. The side lamp turned on. I checked the following:
-bulbs ok
-fuse in car for headlamp 1and2 ok
-fuse link in engine brown ok
I'm thinking its the illumination switch or i shorted the wires. Any thoughts.

Lights sorted. Upon inspecting and cleaning battery connections (which were a rats nest), found the headlight wire disconnected.
Will try to get a mechanic to do a diagnostic of the engine and vitals soon.
Thoughts on washing of the engine bay and engine.
