Nog n iets binne my kar.

My cooler se core is net oor n half meter wyd.
Dankie inelkgeval

This is a great thread Frans....you have great courage to take on a project like that, but Man your van looks awesome now!! You have given me some good ideas for further mods on mine! I look forward to seeing your van "in the flesh" some time soon!! I`m also very keen to chat to you about turbo setups and tuning on the 4.2TD, I`m sure my setup can be optimized compared to the current setup....looks like you did an awesome job on yours!!!

Congrats on an awesome rig!

Cheers,

Ross

Anyway.....

Hi Frans,

Thanks! If you think your plumbing is long, you should see my set-up....there is a really LONG way between the turbo and the intake (definately not optimal!), and I think my intercooler is also too small. I hear what you`re saying about trying to reduce turbo lag, but woun`t you risk loosing intercooler efficiency if you change to a top mount due to the increased heat soak from the engine, and also reduced air-flow over the cooler? Will be an interesting experiment in any case. What boost do you run on your setup??

Cheers,

Ross

Hi Ross
You are right with the intercooler on top soaking the heat off the enjine. That was the main reason why I fitted the cooler in the front. At first I ran my car without a cooler, turbo only. The boost were 1.5 bar with the first turbo,I was happy with the car's performance but I changed the turbo to make it spool quiker. The second turbo just did that, but it only boosted 1.1 bar.It was perfect I did not look for the 1.5 bar but still tried to get the turbo on song early.Witch I fitted a third one. This turbo peaked at 1.1 again and came on song at lower rpm.It was what I wanted. Then I fitted the cooler .
The cooler stole 0.6 bar boost. That is to much.I know the snorkel with the filter steel only 0.1bar boost. That is ok,afterall that is a must. The exhaust rob the boost,or I should say the silencer by 0.1 bar allso. That is fine because the car is to loud without it.The 1.1 bar test without the cooler where with the snorkel and silencer. With the cooler 0.6 were missing.

I am off the mark, but that is why I want to move the cooler ontop. The only thing that satisfy my mind or madniss,I ran the car for long without a cooler.Witch won't make a differance driving slow with a cooler on top.The car was strong,Or shoud I say the performance was good without the cooler, the same with a cooler red hot at slow speed.
I could fit a fan for the slow driving but want to test that first.
So with the cooler on top with shorter pipes the boost should be back at 1.1 or 1.0 bar and cooling the air while driving, and act like a straight pipe on low vehicle speed.
All the tests were done on a dyno. The car make 130kw and 400 nm with the lower boost, but the cooler cool the air and there for the indencity are better. But the front mount cooler gave the car lag.
The first turbo with 1.5 bar made the same power without the cooler,so I am hopeing for more power with the change I am planing now.
All I know, the exhaust systems and turbo's and moving coolers are expensive, and this will be the last move.
Maybe I must do what Alanvs are about to do,V8 the thing.
That sounds nice, but the diesel are a challange for me.I had a V8 hilux, self built, awsome go big or go home type of thing, but it was stupid with fuel consumption.NO OFFENCE ALLAN.to much fuel for cross country.
Rgds
