Nissan Patrol 4x4 (Africa)

Called around and finally got some .25mm shim plate for free as it was an offcut. It is brass so hope it's alright to use, the company that gave it said it will be fine to use so holding thumbs.

I never knew it would be so hard to cut it into the correct shape though, took about 15 min per shim

haha.... yip cutting the shim stock is not the easiest, but 15 mins is a good time though.....

Brass will be 100%, you could use stainless steel too. just add one shim, tighten everything up and see how much Nm it takes to start moving the hub left to right. Then add another if needed.

Cedric, help me out here... I thought that by adding shims you are going to be lifting the bearing out of its seat and thus it should all loosen up. By removing the shims it tightens things up and removes play.

I removed the shims on the Sani as I had wobble wheel syndrome and it all got fixed.

As I have it he had a 0.5 shim in and replaced it with a 0.25 shim. He did not want to remove it completely.

yeah... If removing all the shims, then the pressure on the bearings may be slightly too much ( depending on wear on the old bearings ) so only add a shim to get the correct setting of the bearing. mine were worn badly enough to allow me to run without any shims. I have kept the shims though as when I replace the bearings I will have to refit the shims.

NMAD is adding shims, but I thought he's problem was that he has sloppy front end.

I removed the stock .05mm shim and replaced it with the 0.25mm shim to stiffen the steering up. Its noticeably stiffer than what it was and the wobble is better but its not perfect. May need to put another shim in of about .1m to loosen it up a bit. I think my wobble has more to do with my front wheel bearings as they had some up down play when I shaked the wheel on the jack stand. Got outer bearings and will replace once I get the inner bearings and seals from the agents and report back.

Just for interest sakes, try with no shims in and see if that sorts the problem out. The up down movement may still be play in the king pins. Also check the wheel bearing nut and tighten ( to the correct torque !!!! ) then take for a drive and see. Maybe the wheel bearings are still good....

Jip your patrol is a bit new for those bearings or can you see damage or water problems?
