My GQ is a '96 model.

Methinks the LS diff is on the way out as well. It vibrates when driving at a constant speed on the highway.

So, my next question:

Can one change the ratio on the newer 4,5 or 4,8 diff( with a nice diff-lock) from a 3.999:1( i think) to a 4,111:1?
Will it be cost effective? Or do you think I should stick with the drums and fix up the LSD?
I'm just trying to weigh all my options here.

Your advice would be appreciated.
MIKE SWAN of NIZANI AUTO advises:

Dag se Oompie.

We've got 2 auto locker options here; the Lockright and the Detroit Locker.
The differential style we're talking about is the Nissan H 233B without limited slip.

The Lockright is simply a replacement gearset that uses the OE OPEN (not the L/S) carrier and side gears and successful operation assumes that the OE components are in good working order.
This design was specially made for me for my Nissan Sani rear axle by John Zentmeyer, the owner of Lockright in 1994 and so I can speak from personal experience that it works very well.
It will only work on the 4 pinion split open carrier which your vehicle definitely has in the rear diff.

On certain Patrol models however there are sometimes either the 2 pinion OR the 4 pinion carrier in the front axle and the only way to tell is by opening up the differential and eyeballing the carrier itself.

The Detroit auto locker on the other hand is a complete carrier replacement and can be used in either the front or rear differentials.
New carrier bearings s/be installed.

Oom Mac,

My Trollie is n Diesel.

David,
I replaced the oil(GL-5 i think) with a very fancy synthetic LS oil that they use in AMG mercs and BMW's and so. Maybe that's the problem. I should stick to the older speck oil?

Oom,

Hys nog nie heeltemal in geloop nie. 150K km

Ek dink ek gaan Oom en Pietman se raad volg. Laat die LS regmaak, en kyk dalk na die JAG rem skywe voor.

Thanks julle is almal baie oulik.
