I agree with Christo,

My limit is set at 600 C and it has never exceeded this setting. I also had the oil pressure unit as well as the coolant temp system fitted. This has been an eye opener. Enjoy and be careful. In the initial stages all I watched was the EGT. :goodpost:

In my opinion it makes sense to use the Madman to measure all the main indications of engine safety, being EGT, Oil pressure, Oil temp and water temp, with alarms set on all these.

In that way and combined with regular services using good quality consumables I think a broken engine becomes highly unlikely.

My gauge is non-digital, without alarm, so have to watch manually. Dont think ive ever been above 600d - 620deg. Frans will say that with correct set up EGTs up to 700deg okay. Members of aussie fourm seem a lot more conservative, around the 550deg limit.

Been wondering where i can get a nice unit and get proper fitment, so thanks for the post!

The Aussies often quote post-turbo EGT values (I think they prefer to install the EGT probe post turbo because it is easier). If that is the case here, their 550°C figure is not necessarily more conservative.

For 10 years SAC Centurion have stated that the limit for the 4.2 D with turbo is 620C.In view of the cost of repaire to a diesel unit I what that I do nopt exceed 600C. Phone Mynhard at SAC at 012 012 621 9060 for fitment costs.

I may be somewhat besides the point here but....It remains sad that we as vehicles owners have to install measures to protect the car from itself. In my opinion the car should have its factory installed measures to protect itself from self destruction. We as owners/drivers only have to get in and enjoy the ride. Where is the logic in all this?

ek stem saam JG.

I would take the peace of mind any day over the bit of extra oomph (very little extra oomph) that my after market turbo gives. I am no mechanic like Frans, not in any way, so unless he is my next door neighbor, stock standard is best, imho.

Reasons why up to now i tolerate keeping turbo
1. i bought Patrol 2nd hand with 117,000km on clock. Turbo was fitted at 110,000km with egt gauge from day 1, and instructions from fitment centre not to exceed 550deg.
2. i know guy i bought patrol from drives like me, grandpa
3. conversion done by alpine developments, used to do the old nissan 2.7 factory conversion, know nissan very well and do nice, conservative job. just dont like the air filter they gave me, but im trying to sort that out before april holidays.
4. if everything i own could last a lifetime, i think i could be happy. I definitely try treat my patrol engine the same way. I sometimes make mistakes, like do cross axle too fast, but then wont get good nights sleep for at least a week, and at least that doesnt damage engine :naughty:
5. Lots of evidence of 4.2 doing many miles with aftermarket turbo, if looked after, which i do (see point 4)
6. cost of going back to naturally aspirated, (maybe someone on forum can inform me in more detail?)

When Gerhard fitted the EGT he did set the alarm and very specifically to 750 degrees, he told me that 600 degrees is a safe operating temp. I have tried out the EGT towing a caravan this weekend and while it is possible to stay under 600 degrees I did "achieve" 630 degrees. I have fitted the extra fan on the intercooler and still my car exceeds 600 on an incline if I put foot to much. I am going to change that alarm to 600 NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that the EGT will teach you a much better way of driving.
