EGT fitted

Post by Izak »

Hello

Had my Patrol fitted with an EGT today at SAC Centurion. Took us a while to agree as to where the EGT must be fitted but in the end I think it looks great.

Tested it on the way home from Centurion and I have to say I never thought the Turbo gasses can get that warm, that quick. Rockets from 340 cruising on downhill to 560 uphill at 120 in 5th gear. The moment I decelerate the temp immediately goes down.

I always sort of had the idea that the temp goes up and down gradually.

My thanx and appreciation to Gerhard, Pieter and the appie Michael.

560 is still considered low, particularly in comparison to Land cruiser 1hz with turbo, which exceeds 650 regularly, and is borderline disaster maintenance.

I had one in my Defender Tdi for 2 years now. Madman unit and it does other levels and pressures etc. Generally monitoring

But as far as learning is concerned, nothing more valueable than EGT. It will change your driving style, make your foot lighter and save some fuel. It shows what an engine goes trough. By far the best investment I have made in my vehicle.M y non computer 2.5 tdiesel have reached 660 uphill against a headwind.

Other interesting facts I have found:
Letting the motor run against compression rather than simply taking it out of gear for coasting, cools the temps down more effectively (lots of air little diesel) I now only slow down thisway, it also keeps oil pressure up
After shut down, and 2 minutes later starting it up, the start up temp is higher than on shut down (no more air travelling trough the chaimbers, heat build up re-heats the block)
Towing in 4th even uphill is not only better for the gearbox, but for the engine as well

Think of this. If the EGT is 600, what must it be inside the combustion chambers?

Yes they supplied. Please phone the different SAC branches to get a Quote as the price at Centurion and Boksburg differed with R 1100.

Gerhard set the alarm on the Patrol at 750deg C. Is that not to high?

I agree with everyone else - this is the best investment to make for a diesel motor!

750 degrees C is the default upper value for the Madman unit, which means that they left it up to you to decide what to use as an upper limit. My Madman's EGT limit is set to 600 C (if I'm not mistaken), but it has never gone above 580 C.

BTW: Those Landys run much hotter than the Patrols (according to the blokes at LandyOnline who fitted the sensors for my Madman unit). Trying to emulate them will result in serious engine damage...
