This is typical of "'n Boer maak 'n plan". I will keep this one in mind.

It makes me think about "explode the tyre back onto the rim with petrol" method of tyre repair. I learned that back in the "PW & seuns" camps and made use of it recently in Mozambique.

To test this method, we set up a land rover series vehicle with rear wheel in the air and wragtag, second pull with adequate length of snatch strap wound around the tyre and the damn thing started! DO NOT TRY THIS WITH A PERMANENT 4x4 DRIVE TRAIN!!! And make sure you unwind the entire length of the strap when she fires. Therefore don't use this method on a Discovery, Landcruiser Prado etc. The Patrol is fine as it is rear wheel drive in normal tar road configuration.

My Range Rover Classic V8 had a crankhandle with a dog fitted to the front of the crank pulley. There was a keyhole slot in the steelbumper and the V8 would start very easily with a solid (read quick and strong) 180 degree pull . BUT, this method was less successful early in the morning in the middle of the Karoo with minus temperatures as the engelsman did not like the cold!

Let us know if it works on 4.8 litres of piston displacement!

Saltman it should work on permanent 4x4 as long as no diffs are locked. The permanent 4x4 has a diff mechanism between the wheels as well as one in the center. That is why my Defender is all out of ideas with one wheel in the air, center diff unlocked.

I should have tested it yesterday when I was bored.

I must admit that this circuit has one shortcoming. If you do want to have your lights on without a key in the ignition (For instance shedding light at night in a campsite)there is that constant beep that gets on your nerves. I once built a similar circuit that had a little bypass button. If I can find I will post it as well.

Did you ever find the diagram of the circuit with the bypass function? I want to do something similar with a relay that resets itself when the car restarts, i.e. you can kill the buzzer, but when you start the car it resets itself, ready to buzz the next time you forget to switch off the lights.

PS. do you have any part numbers?

The Prado has a system I like .. on removal of the key AND opening the driver's door, the head lights OFF itself .. switches right back on when you turn on the ignition again .. One feature of the Toy I really enjoy

Russ I had a alarm fitted to my Troll that cost me R350 and all it is an alarm that screams when the ignition is off and the lights are on with the door open.

I have got my troll battery very flat and had to resort to be pull started in 3rd. As for the idea of a rope around a wheel. No chance of that working on our 4.2 diesels.

That's why there is something called a jumper pack, I never leave home with out the pack in the patrol.....to push a patrol you need lots of red bull.
