08 4.8 GRX (275/65R17 to 285/70R17?)

Post by Rickster »

Hi

Can anyone driving a 4.8 tell me if changing from std tyres (275/65/17) to 285/70/17 BFG A/T will affect the performance. I tow a fairly heavy boat and am concerned that I will lose torque.

Many thanks

Only negative I can think of is that your spare wheel cover will not fit over a 285 tyre - you will need an aftermarket cover...

Hi Guys

I also have a 2010 model 4.8 GRX with the 275/65 R17 tyres. I would like to change to a rim size which will give me more options (choices) with regards to tyres. Obviously a 16" rim would be the way to go to achieve that. I do not know, however, if I can do that.
How will it affect the handling characteristics and roadholding ?
Are there any other risks/downside like modifications ?
If I can go that route, what size tyre would you then recommend ?
If the 16" route is not advisable, what do you recommend I do in order to enable me to fit a set of BFG's or Cooper's to my vehicle (you do not get them in 275/65 R17) ?

Please help ?

The BFG A/T are available in sizes from 265/70/17 to 315/70/17 and the mud terrain KM2's in 265/70/17 and 285/70/17

Hi David

Thanks for the reply.

Would it be OK to fit a set of Mud-Terrains in 285/70 R17's ? Would it not influence the handling negatively ?

I am still stuck with my BFG 265/70/17 A/T tyres so can not really comment. Had a set of 33" Good Year MTR's on the old Safari which were incredible off-road but close to dangerous on wet tar. It is always a compromise - the muds will have more road noise on tar and the 285's will not fit in the solid spare-wheel cover but you will get much further off-road and the chance of damaging a side wall should be less with the mud's and they look so nice!

Personally I think you must decide what you want to achieve and then accept the negatives (if any) that go with it.

Currently top of my wish list is a set of 285 KM2's and then a snorkel ... freeflow..... chip.....dvd.... - All part of the fun!

Why would you want a DVD in a Patrol?
