Superchargers suck! You really do need a lot more airflow! But your standard setup should manage just fine with the factory filter.
The supercharger needs for fuel than the standard set up can supply, hence the extra fuel pump. It is safe to assume the stand setup cannot supply enough air iether.
There is no dispute that the Patrol will go if you push the pedal to the floor, and while I agree that she will do 160 relatively hassle free, in my case I feel that I am pressing the accelerator far more than I would like too. And hills tend to sap all that momentum rather rapidly.
There comes a point when the sheer wind resistance is too much, at speed and she will gear down to 4th.
Strong head wind makes this even worse.
What the Supercharger does is make driving effortless and because there is more power available she will not gear down to 4th, so overall tractability increases.
I find I manipulate her into 4th for long steel up-hills to minimize heat into the auto box, rather than have her lock out staying in 5th. The above all rpm dependant.
At 3000 rpm on standard tyres she will hold her speed on any hill at an indicated 150 and stay locked up.
If you were towing or overtaking, or both, the benefits of said charger become undeniably apparent.
It never was about doing 200, but improving the overall drivability of the Patrol, for me personally.
In standard guise I found her too cumbersome, too heavy, and she had to be worked too hard to produce results, post conversion I’ll still be doing my cruising speeds of between 140 and 160, just effortlessly now and with minimal throttle input.
I hate pressing the accelerator on any car almost as much as I loathe braking.
Now 15 to 20 % throttle input provides all I want from the car and yes it is an expensive conversion but having done it, I doubt I’ll regret having done it.
And perhaps a Turbo rig will be even better, I cannot comment as I have not driven one, but in my personal opinion, this is the way to go.
Agree with you 100% there Julian, speaking from the perspective of the 4.5 though. She is way too cumbersome and heavy yet still a pleasure to drive. When I come up on a truck that I can't overtake at speed, then overtaking it becomes a real process. I'm also looking at supercharging rather than turbocharging, but that will be later down the line for me.
I have been really keen to test consumption since I have had her charged.
Keeping to the speed limit resulted in 17 l/100 tested over 110 km trip on N17 to Kinross Sasol.
Then travelling at a brisk pace, around 140/160 over a further distance of 159 km consumption was
17.3 l/100 with an incredible wind from the right. Refilled in Volksrust.
Route has many hill climbs, increase in elevation overall.
Earlier during the slower section that wind would have been at my rear.
I believe driving for economy I could get this down to 16l/100 at around constant 130 true speed.
I am quite pleased that charging hasn’t made her ridiculously heavy and considering performance is quite acceptable.

Julian
Thanks for that.
Just for comparative purposes, do you have a bull bar and a roof rack?
I do have a aluminium TJM so it doesn’t weigh too much but no roof rack.
Yesterday travelling from Wakkerstroom to Hluhluwe I averaged 15.9l/100, or 6.3km/l over the trip sitting mostly at 130-140 indicated speed.
Tyres pumped 2.4 front and a bi
Party of 4 with luggage but not weighed down at all.
I am testing economy at the pump, fill to fill.
Very pleased with consumption thus far.
The Patrol being such a big vehicle, its difficult to ascertain the actual performance but yesterday going up a steep mountain pass, a latest model Isuzu 300 thought I would be a liability up the pass.
I in 5th out accelerated him all the way to the top, he couldn’t take me much to his surprise…
I was towing the Jurgens Explorer this holiday (1.7t on holiday) and a new Fortuner 2.8 came up behind me and when the road became a passing lane on a steep uphill I decided to give it gas and see if the Fortuner could get by... So right at the top of the long hill his nose was about level with my back bumper and he was not going to get by before the top of the hill. Missus poked me in the ribs because she knew I was messing with the Toyota and I tapped off to let him by.
In the Fortuners defence he was towing a ventertjie.
