Update on my consumption

100% Urban Cycle

No Roof rack
No Spare wheel
No Drawer system

Only used for daily driving maximum 10km to work and I miss all the traffic

With 7% compensation for larger wheel size, inflated to 2.5

Mileage on this tank 475km and 117litres of fuel average 4km/l

Im starting to wonder whether my consumtion is an anomaly....

Short trips like that are the worst possible scenario, both in terms of consumption and engine life.

the engine probably hasn't even reached operating temperatures when you get to work, and the mixture is still running rich to compensate. It is quite likely badly carbon'ed up as well...

What year is your 4.8 Karl? Is there any traffic lights / stop streets on the trip? Town driving for me only gets around 5km/l so you're not far off.

You should get 4.8..... it says so on your door..... just kidding. But Peter is right, and I have the same problem with my 4.2 turbo diesel. I do the school rum in the morning and then to the office ( 11Km ) and then home in the evening ( 8km ) and will get about 18L/100km. I try once a week to give it a good rum.... I mean run to burn the rubbish out and then she purrs ( duff duffs ) like a kitten.

Patrols are very heavy and have the aerodynamics of a brick, so getting these chunks of iron moving takes fuel.... and lots of it

It's a 2010 with 95000km, regular services i.e. oil changes and filters every 7500km give or take.

I didn't think of that as a cause, my mind started running for worse case scenario like Sensors or something more sinister - what that would be I don't know.

I'll take her for a loooooooooong burn from Durbanville to Malmesbury to clean out the cr@p. Will see what this does to the next tank.

4km/l does seem a bit high...?

in town stop start driving I get close to what it says on the door (not a 4.8 though) - and this is in a small town, 30-50km/h. maybe 2-3 km round trip max..
Open road, 100-120km/h, get 6km/l...

On the river trip, thick river sand, low range: got 2.8km/l...

test it on the "open road", lets see what it gets..

Could it not be blocked catalytic converters causing the poor fuel economy, considering the short runs?
I know in Bmw diesels they have a regen cycle which only happens if the car is up to operating temperature for long enough .

Just a thought?

That long burn run might just be what you need although I'm not sure if the Patrol has a regen cycle or if its just a function of heat?

Short range driving is the worst - that was already mentioned.
I just had ECUtalk on my car for the first time. It was -negatively- impressive, with how little thrust the consumption goes up.
If you not literally have a feather-like right foot, your engine will have a very high momentary consumption.
And in addition (I have to check for a longer timer, but the first impression was like that) an gear under fourth is just like a hole in the tank.

My average is 18.6l/100km or so.
In town with short trips there is no chance to get below 20l/100km.
And if I cruise in Kruger in fourth gear and around idle RPM it goes down to 15l/100km or so.

So depending on the kind of road / traffic you are on/ in to me your consumption sounds not unreal.
