Diesel lubrication additive

Just a thought
Does anyone ever use a lubrication additive to your diesel tank ?

I know that older type diesel engines were designed to use 500ppm diesel so that the sulphur content was used as a lubricant for the injector pump parts and injectors.
Newer diesel engines are designed to use 50ppm exclusively due to the greater pressures they operate at, being common rail diesels.
I've been told that some of the new generation common rail engines will be designed to run on 10ppm only. Anything else in the tank and the warranty will be void.
Problem is I've never seen 10ppm at fuel stations.

To get back to the point...
Does anyone use an additive, and if so :
1. What brand ?
2. Where do you source it from ?
3. Are the results noticeable ?
4. How long have you been running it for in your diesel ?

I used to buy pharmaceutical grade acetone and put 50ml per 5L of diesel into my Land Rover 300Tdi I had once upon a time.
That used to clean it out really well
That engine ran with no smoke or any issues (not even a break down...in a Land Rover mind you) for 340 000km. Then I woke up, sold it and bought a real 4x4
Well, actually... a certain 4x4 shop that I won't mention wrecked the vehicle when I took it in to fit a suspension kit. It just fell apart after they were through destroying it

As far as I know 50ppm and 10ppm diesel are produced for emission purposes and nothing else. It is true that the sulphur aids as a lubricating agent in the old school pumps, but this matter has also been discussed a lot on many other forums.

It seems like the majority of old school oil burners add 2-strole oil to the diesel as the best additive. I have used it a couple of times, but not on a regular basis. Not sure what the effect the 50ppm really has on the pump.

I try to use 50ppm instead of 10ppm but not really fussy on what I throw in. We rarely find 500ppm in Gauteng these days.

Sasol has the 10ppm diesel. Luckily our old school motors can run with just about anything. I use the Castrol diesel ( 50ppm ) cause it was R11,28 a litre, and I have been filling up there for years now. Every now and again, I add 200 - 300ml of 2 stroke oil into the diesel tank. Does it do any good, does it do any damage..... who knows and who cares.... Its an unending debate !

What I can tell you is that it makes my motor run a LOT quieter. That typical diesel chunk chunk is definitively quieter. I used to even put 100ml into my SANI 3.0 V6 every 3rd or so tank full of petrol. It, in my mind, made that motor sound healthier. I also had an Isuzu 280 turbo diesel that I sold with over 500 000Km on, with its original turbo and un opened motor. Was it due to good regular servicing or the 2 stroke or a combination of all 2 ..... I don't know, but in my opinion it does make a difference. I was also told to rather use marine 2 stroke instead of normal 2 stroke, but as marine 2 stroke is a lot more expensive that normal 2 stroke, and my wallet is not looking very healthy, I have been using normal 2 stroke for about 8 months and the Iron Maiden still sounds very healthy !!

But yes, like Cedric said......who knows really and who cares. These engines run on any diesel you put in the tank. I have filled up many times with 10ppm and could not feel any difference.

I definitely thinks there an improvement in pulling power between 50 ppm and 10ppm
when ever I come back from white river with the sprinter van and fill up at the Sasol garage with 10ppm I can run out Patatas neck in top gear at 120kmh compare to 100kph when using 50ppm
and coming back its only me in the van and I always drive home some sort-off time and i'm always in a hurry coming home

I meant Caltex.....
