Re: The 3.0 GU Engine
The egr is just a bit of shimstock to stop the flow and the cat you can get rid of when you upgrade the exhaust. Not technical at al

Re: The 3.0 GU Engine
Where the last batches of these DI / Intercooled engines renowned for giving issues? Let's say we compare it to a D-4D Toyota 3.0 Diesel engine?

I only noticed your pic now. Yes it the Di. But dont stress like cedric said.
You can also speak to micheal. He can help you with all the goodies. This wil just help protect the motor and will enable you to keep an eye on things. You can then react pro-actively and safe your car.

Re: The 3.0 GU Engine
Nothing to worry about Johann
If you are willing to invest a couple of rands in your Patrol it will serve you well.
3" exhaust, a madman and the EGR delete is some of the things I would do first

Re: The 3.0 GU Engine
Thanks for the advice guys. I read something on the Aussie Patrol forum with regards to a EGR cleanup of the engine after EGR has been removed. Does anyone know of this?

Re: The 3.0 GU Engine
Michael & Josh, where can I find a EGT that measures not only exhaust emmission temperatures but also piston head temp? How do I go about removing the EGR? I know its a repetitive question but I am really not very technically inclined in this regard. Would like to do so ASAP.

Re: The 3.0 GU Engine
The Madman system is probably the best set up of all, as it measures a multitude of items. One would need to shop around for best prices on these ( Google is your friend ). The system I have is an avionic system, and again I think only via Google will you find it. VDO pyrometer gauges can be bought via Control Instruments. All of the above gauges will need a "type J" or Type K" temperature probe that will need to be fitted on the exhaust, as close to the engine block as possible. Depending on your exhaust manifold setup would depend on how and where that probe will need to be fitted, but it usually would require removal of the manifold and drilling and tapping an suitable hole for the probe.
I have branches on my 4.2 diesel, so my probe is fitted onto the coupling where all six pipes join together.
Piston head temp can only be guessed by the EGT probe, hence the reason for fitting the probe as close to the engine block ( exhaust outlet ) as possible. To give you an idea of how the temps can fluctuate, I have 2 probes on my Patrol. The first, as I mentioned is pre turbo, at the junction of all six exhaust pipes. The second probe is post turbo. The position of this probe is about 500mm after the exhaust side of the turbo. The temperature difference between pre and post turbo is around 100 deg C.
I also have 2 x CHT ( cylinder head temp ) settings on my MGL system. that is basically 2 x "copper washer" looking sensor, that is bolted onto the cylinder head and will tell you exactly that. I haven't connected mine. I know if my EGT's are under control, then my cylinder head will be fine.
So it all depends on what you want to measure, how much you want to measure, and what you want to spend. A Madman is a little more expensive, especially once you have all the probes included. But it will give you the best all round information. The VDO type pyro gauge with a probe will be the cheapest, but at least you will have some way to monitor the temps, but bear in mind unlike my set up or the Madman set up, the plain VDO type gauges don't have audible alarms !!!!
EGR removal.... hmmm sorry bud, my Iron Maiden doesn't have electronics and fancy stuff in it....

Re: The 3.0 GU Engine
Speak to Tinus about the madman. He gets it for a good price. Micheal can help with the instalation. Micheal has worked on a few 3.0di's recently.
There is a lot of us running madan systems. They are great and there is full service and parts backup in SA. If you want to speak to the directly or visit them go to http://www.madman.co.za.
The EGR does not need removal. It gets blanked off. My local Nissan dealer blanked my EGR off for me for free.
Pm me your email and I will send you a document found on the aus forum. That explains all about your di and how to improve it.
