Opinion on the Patrol 4.2 sgl on Autotrader

Post by mayurpatelza »

Hi,

I'm looking at getting an older 4x4 for the following(in order of actual use):
1. Camping, hiking and National Parks around South Africa
2. 4x4 trails around Gauteng
3. A few overlanding trips into Southern Africa(possibly further)
I've been looking at old defenders or cruisers but the older patrol intrigued me.

There is a maroon 4.2 SGL Patrol on Autotrader for R99k. I would love some opinions from a far more knowledgeable crew.

I have a little knowledge about cars and have been to see the vehicle and found the following:
1. It looks pretty clean for a 250k kms vehicle
2. Front bumper is slightly bent inwards(looks like it may have hit something)
3. All panels gaps are pretty good except for slight issue with the bonnet
4. there looks to be rust or some filler beneath the battery tray but it felt pretty solid(cant be sure)
5. Interior is fairly dirty but solid. I liked that cos you see the actual state before a valet
6. Tyres don't all match - different spare
7. Autotrader says R99k actual car says R109k - I cannot understand why they do that

Can I please get some thoughts on the following:
1. Any specific issues for me to look for on the car?
2. Spares availability? Do I have to go through stealers or are there other sources? Are parts for this vintage and model easily available?
3. You don't see too many of them around. Is that a concern for second hand parts??
4. Is the price reasonable for what it is?

Thanks for the help.

Any extra's on the vehicle?

If not that price is pretty steep for that model.... you can start looking at a 4.5 in that price range.

I drove the 4.2 SGL till last year July (1995) had 238,000km on when I sold to Boskoets on the forum, currently have the 4.2 St with 415000km on (1996).

Millage on these Patrols is not a problem, if looked after 800k is not an issue.

To date no problem with spares, stealers is a pain in the ... but they can assist, we mostly use David in Bela Bela as he usually have what you are looking for.

Graham in Valhalla service quit a number of the Patrol's on this forum and he also provides a service where he will give a prospective Patrol a once over at no price to give you an opinion on the vehicle.

I live in Krugersdorp, you are more than welcome to come and have a look at my vehicle

Hi welcome here
A patrol will be your best bet for what you want to use it for ....
That is a gq model is a great car and spares are avalible from dawid or agents
100k to me is a bit steep for what it is
If you want to buy a good car look under market place that blue 4.5 gu model is the way to go .....that one has 135000 km on and is clean in every way the tires only will be around 25k to replace on that model you are looking at .
The takkies on the 4.5 is stil great at least 80% and there is 5 of them
I have found and looked at pleanty patrols for people but this one is probably the cleanest one i have seen ....
A 4.5 gu goes for about 120 depends on condition
A 4.2 sgl goes for about 70 to 80 k if its very good ....that is the petrol ones
Anyway hope it helps you

I would have a look at this one http://www.gumtree.co.za/a-cars-bakkies ... 0379335809 R68k neg so probably 65 or less if you can wheal and deal.

That leaves you with R35k to spend on the Patrol to get it the way you want it.

That blue 4.5 is to drool over

I have to agree with both Tinus and Dirk !!! Fuel consumption between the two is negligible, and for the price comparing the two the GU ( blue one mentioned by Tinus) is going to be far better value for money. The GQ model you mention, in my opinion must have a lot of accessories on to sell for R100K plus.

I would definitively get the owner/dealer to take the Patrol to Graham for a look over, and he will give you a straight up honest answer on the Patrol. He is VERY knowledgeable on these vehicles !!!

Thanks for the tips guys.
I'll keep Graham in mind for services and to look over any Gauteng Patrols I find. I looked on Junkmail just as a quick check and I found David (from Bela Bela) as well.

Regarding the car - I wondered why it hadn't sold already and wasn't on the forum as well. 100k is lot more than the 60-70

As for the blue patrol - are you talking about the 4.5 in Stellies? I was that on Gumtree as well. 140k is out of my budget, but I'm going to chat to the wife and see what she says.

Jip thats the one it belongs to Jasper good mate of mine
What you must realise with older cars is that its all about value for money .....that car looks like it steped of the show room floor never stood in the sun and maintained to high standards ...the takkies are the best in my opinion and are about new . When spending a 100k on a car and it needs a set of tires you are in for 25k for a set of 33 rubber . That one has a new radiator new viscus ect ect all done becouse it was time . A viscus coupling is 5k so getting a clean car for like 35k more is sometimes a better plan .
Please post links of cars that you are looking at and we can help if possible.
I would just have a nother look at the GU model it is slightly more spacious.
GQ is also great but iam a bit big for them

Thanks. I will look into them. I didn't even consider any patrols. I just saw the GQ on Autotrader and didn't know why Patrols were off my radar so I went to look at it. Will be looking at all I can find in my price bracket in the next few weeks.

Always nice when you find okes who'll help you out without even knowing you. (I just found this forum yesterday and registered today). Thanks for all the help so far.
