My 4.2 N/A Diesel Pickup 2007 runs like a dream and i've put down 214 000 km on the motor.

Round town - no issues, i fly about and never feel like im left behind.

On the Highway - 120km/h at 2800RPM with ease, just takes a little longer than most to get it there, but engine seems very unstressed.

Up hills on long trips - depends on the hill, how long, how steep, and how the people in front of you drive. Long story short - the Landy will murder the Patrol.

Towing - Big Farm Tailer at low speed - Please, dont even know its there.
Small 2m venter trailer on the freeway, no issue.
2.2Ton trailer on the highway - Nightmare. (in regard to speed/power etc).

Note: The patrol has always felt extremely stable and safe under all my heavy heavy loads and is very sure footed over rough ground.

This is purely my observation since owning my Patrol and others may vary.

If i had my chance again i may just have chosen the TD42Ti variant and tweaked it a little. pretty easy to get double the grunt if you have the original platform.

On a non turbo 4.2 there isn't much one can do..... If you take out the silencers it will be VERY noisy, if you try pump more diesel into the motor without feeding more air ( via turbo) you will start to melt the engine ( this goes for any diesel engine )

What you are stuck with is probably the most reliable bulletproof low rev torque engine ever made. With the right modification ( turbo and intercooler ) the power can be up'ed quite a bit, but to do this will not be a cheap conversion. I believe that once the turbo and I/C is fitted the Patrol becomes a formidable animal, and only then can you kick out the old exhaust and fit a straight through 3" pipe for an exhaust that is still quiet due to the turbo acting as the silencer !!

Looking at that, I think that there is a front mounted intercooler fitted. I assume this due to the way the pipes are running from the turbo to the intake manifold. I can't see if it is a water cooled turbo or not but looks like a neat installation, with exhaust branches that look identical to my set up!!.

The only negative with the branches is that there are no heat shields to stop heat transfer from the exhaust branches to the turbo. This can be remedied with a little cutting and grinding to make a plate/shield.

On mine I have a HUGE radiator ( bought it like that ) and NEVER had overheating issues. I would suggest a radiator flush and replace antifreeze with CORRECT percentage and fresh water and Bob's ya Auntie

Other than that ..... looks good

I agree with Cedric, installing a turbo is the right thing to do. These engine are quite tough and you don’t need to do anything on the internals if you keep the EGT’s under control.
This will give you the power you are after and can be affordable if you shop around a bit.

You dont have to run the engine with an intercooler as the Aussies only use intercoolers when they start making big horspower. Your EGT’s will just be a bit higher and power will be a bit lower than with an IC.

You will also need another Injector pump that needs to deliver more fuel when the turbo starts to boost

Fanus,

With the turbo set up you will reveal the possibilities of these engines.

The intercooler really makes a differance as it hikes the power and torque. Also helps keep the egt's low. This is however achieved by the correct setup. Also you need to fit a 3" exhaust with no silencers. give the truck the correct exhaust note.

See the Safari site below on what a turbo and then intercooler can do for the old diesel.

How much, more or less, does the safari turbo/intercooler kit go for?

You are going to pay quite a bit for it new, but if you shop around for secons hand parts you will save loads of money.
Nothing wrong with a used turbo and manifold, it can be checked out by a turbo place for a small fee.

Give David a call, Im sure he will have everything you need.
Mr. Turbo sells intercoolers for durt cheap, between R800 and R1200 for new ones
