just my :mytwocents: ....

I have never driven the 4.2 N/A so I can't comment on power/speed over the aftermarket turbo fitted to the 4.2 like I have. What I can say is I've had the BMW speed and handling "era" of my life, and doing 280Km on a Suzuki TL 1000R V-twin superbike..... and just as thrilling as that was.... I advanced to a Nissan Sani.... and a bigger bolder, go anywhere I choose "era" eveolved. I needed MORE !!! now I have the ULTIMATE ( yes some would disagree) I have an animal now, extreamly powerful, does 120Km/h quite easily, and nobody cuts me off anymore..... not even the ..... never mind  ..... I went to Inhambane in December..... loaded to the hilt.... drove for 14 hours (short stops here and there included), climbed out the Patrol and still felt like I had a body that could function.

The ride is fantastic !! you feel solidly planted to the tarmac. fuel consumption I think is FANTASTIC, for a 4.2 litre 6 cylinder, old technology motor, even with the aircon running almost constantly during the day. I must point out though, I have a huge aftermarket radiator fitted, so don't battle with water temp at all. EGT's now here is the only negative I have. Due to the turbo I have fitted being a 0.9 bar turbo ( I bought the Patrol with all this stuff already fitted) I seem to get high egt's when climbing a long hill under load. Will I climb that hill quicker in a Landy...... I doubt it, but either way... one may beat the other by a few seconds.... over a 1 hour or more, what a few seconds. For me it is more about having the comfort, not only for me but for my passengers.... especially the ....ummm.... back seat drivers !!... Keep them comfy and the trip is already a pleasure. I was saddend that the Patrol, even though bigger than the SANI, was slightly shorter in leg room between the front and rear seats..... but they were still comfy !!

So Would I go for petrol.... no.... nice grunt... but thirsty... diesel.... not fast but will get you there a few minutes later but with less speeding fines and feeling a lot more refreshed than in most off road or overlanding vehicles.

PS.... this is how strong the 4.2 (6 cylinder) is. I burnt a hole through the number 2 piston 3 weeks after I bought the Patrol. I had no service records on the Patrol. It turned out hat the injectors wer way overdue for service, and was dripping diesel onto the piston instead of spraying in.... To cut a long story short.... I drove my patrol back from Botswana 550Km to my house.... they are indestructable even when destroyed.... :rolling:

Long live the Patrols..... Its what you want out of the machine that must make up your mind !!

Cedric

What is a comfortable cruising speed for the 4.2d? Can it maintain 100-110km/h when driving uphill?

Yup, and PETROL is down R3 per litre and falling, so my 4.8 now costs almost 25% less to run

hahaha..... yip and diesel is still getting cheaper too...... its a win win situation !!!!! :blonde: :blonde: :blonde: :blonde: :blonde: :blonde:

To answer SJC, A nice cruising speed is between 120 and 130 in a GU 4.2 diesel with turbo, the motor is sitting in its power band and you just cruise

Bogeyman will be able to answer you better on that but from what I can recall ( was on the pickup and not station wagon) he said that his 4.2 N/A can cruise comfortably at 120 - 130, but takes a little longer and takes a little strain on the uphills.

And will even run on cooking oil at only R2.00 litre :rolling: .. Ok my old 2.7TD does anyways....

The 2,7 is just a cut down version of the 4,2. Both motors are fairly much tough as nails if treated right. When I drowned mine at Rust de Winter in 2008, I got it going with hardly any water pump and water and bashed at back home to Joburg. When the insurance came to fetch it with the flatbed, old Hillbilly still got on under his own steam.

I am still waiting in anticipation for that day Iron Maiden and Hillbilly can join each other on an overlanding trip. Just so I can compare a few things in real world circumstances :driving: .

Thats the beauty about the 2.7 and 4.2 motors..... you can run them on weird and wonderful fuels, with very little issues. Half the parts are the same between the 2 motors anyway ( pistons - rings - bearings - precom chambers - sleeves etc etc )

Dave ..... that day will come brother and we will travel !!!
