Zantus, I suspect it might well be easier to pull the engine than the gearbox.

Both are unbelievably heavy.

I'm going to leave that decision up to my mechanic. I think the gearbox will be easier if you have to car up on a hoist and you have a gearbox hoist. You can also then run the engine for a while to check for further leaking with the gearbox removed, but you cannot do it very easily with the engine outside the car. I don't have the equipment at home to take out the engine or gearbox. And if it leaks again after all that effort, I don't have to do it all over again.

I'm first going to try and repair the viscous coupling before I spend money on a non genuine replacement.

I have had no luck repairing those things it is a integral part of keeping your motor alive

I agree with Thinus.
If that coupling is not 100% it WILL cost you dearly.

As painful as it is , I always replace with the genuine Nissan part.

I've updated the thread title. My research has shown it is actually a 1991 model, not a 1992 model as I was told by the seller.

When my mechanic did my clutch and replaced the flywheel, they dropped the gearbox, according to him it took 5 guys to catch/carry it. He said that if they ever had to do it again, they would rather pull the engine.

PAUL - daar by Menlyn Brake & Clutch het so staal stawe wat hy onner die ratkas inskuf en wat p die "chassis" han en vas klam.
Dan skuif hy die ratkas agtertoe teen n helling vervang alles daar binne, laat die3 vliegwiel skuur en gladsny, en dan skuif hy net weer alles terug.

MAAR dit was op die Terrano - of hy selle trieks virri Patrol het .. dit weet ek nie.

Graham het ook so trollie ding wat die ratkas klamp met kettings ens dan kan die boks beweeg word sonder om te veel te sukkel .....the bigger the problem .....the bigger the hammer hey???

When I changed the clutch on the Patrol it was done by a mechanic that has done many Cruisers. By his estimation the GQ G/B and transfer box weighs around 80kg's more that the cruisers. Built to last

I spoke to my mechanic and he will pull the box. He works alone and has equipment to handle heavy stuff. Besides that it is a lot less risk to remove the gearbox than to remove the engine.
