Rev Counter working intermittently

Post by Grant »

Hi Gents,

Rev counter working intermittently. Looked at the pic up on the back of the pump and no problems there. This weekend I will be taking apart the dash as I am sure the problem is there. I will also then be fitting some LED dash lights at the same time.

Any suggestions ?

I had this problem with my speedometer.
It was stuck, then jumps up if I go fat enought and gets stuck at 110km again, unttil standstil, then jumpas back ddown again.
It got progressively worse.

Because I have no less than 10 thumps, I had no ambition of trying to open my dashboard to fix it myself.
So I took it to people who fixed it for me. They were too expensive to recommend.

It had something to do with the little spring holding the needle of the seepdometer getting stuck.
I do not know how generic this spring is, but I guess once taken out you can check at scrapyards? Else it may just be dust and the like that needs to be cleaned out?

Hi Alex,

TX, but it seems rather like a loose connection. When I hit a bump it starts/stops. Will take some pics of the process.

Before you start dismantling, just pul out each fuse in turn and spray some contact cleaner?

Grant,
Had trouble with my GQ revcounter and after many cursewords I took it to VR2 Instruments in Pretoria west.0123236586
It cost me R950.00 but working well.

I also have a spare instrument cluster if you want to swap parts to eliminate the instrument. It is very easy to remove. 6 Phillips screws and 2 plugs.
I think the petrol and diesel clusters are interchangeable.

Grant
If the spark is bad, the rev counter can show the effect. So the counter might be right and something else are going bad.
Make sure to check the ignition system before you overhall the cluster.

Grant, If yours Diesel 4.2. My mistake, me tought 4.2 petrol
Anyway on the diesel, check the pick-up on the cam cover. Remove it and clean. Make sure the wiring are ok.
Its a 2-wire magnetic sensor, not mutch can go wrong. Then off cause the cluster...
