Hay Biggles, the diesels run on a smelly rag compared to the 4.8's around town! Worked out my 4.8 costs me R2.60 per km in fuel (R169 per day to the office and back!) But hell its fun getting their and back :blonde: :woo:

Did the Marcuskraal trail in Citrusdale on the week-end. My Oh My what a vehicle.

They have a 5 grade climb that was dispatched with laughable ease, with diff-loc (just to check it was working  ). I am still learning where the corners are I am definitely going to have to look harder for a challenge than with the jeep.

After getting to know the old girl i am going to be posting questions in the relevant sections... fuel consumption is on the heavy side at 17l/100km so far... not sure if there is something wrong. A lot of mountain passes and offroad included (21l/100km) for 560km. Still need to do a fuel up for the last leg of the week-end.

Dune performance was OK. I was not expecting the best results being a diesel. But the ship did OK and was very comfortable. It did get hot after several attempts at the long uphills but that was the same as the Jeep so I don't consider it a train smash.

Very nice Patrol you have, my advice is don't bother working out the consumption. I drive a 4.5 with a lot of mods and extra weight and just enjoy every moment driving the beast. I was camping over X Mas and there was a guy with a new Jeep bragging that he gets 14 liters per 100km towing. His insurance was about R1500 pm thats 18K a year, he lost about 70K when drove the Jeep off the show room floor. Thats 100K in the first year...... I just smile when people say I drive a gas gusseler. As I only use mine for fun and holidays and have no depreciation worries, low insurance, minimal tyre wear and maintenance due to low usage the 3Km per liter heavier is really not a problem. Go out there and enjoy that vehicle in the knowledge that it is over designed, understressed and extremely capable. Rgds Caz

+1000

And to add: minimal risk of theft

I would still be tempted to have the car checked out by Tour de Frans.
I have heard of consumption on the 4.2 TD of 16l per 100.
Or at least check with Pieter du Toit what he used to get

I do a LOT of short stop start trips as its my daily drive. I'm not shy to blow diesel smoke out my exhaust when I pull off, and I average around the 16-17L/100Km mark...... but on the open road, if I drive nicely (115-120Km/h) I have gotten as low as 12.1L/100Km. I would average say about 13.5 - 14L/100Km when I do a trip to Ponta do Ouro.
