DEATH WOBBLE ????

The Jeeps have the same problem and looking at the posts, I think more so than the Patrols. Here is Bleepinjeep's channel on Youtube that I think could be helpful.

Yip... This is definitely not a permanent fix, just a temp fix till I get my donkey into gear and buy the new kingpin bearings. Then I'll put the shims back to get the correct tension

Just something i dont get though.... Both my Patrol bakkies had showed signs of this in some way or another even from the tender age of 50 000km or so,......surely the king pin bearings/knuckle assembly could not have been worn by that stage?

This Wobble is literally the only thing i HATE about Nissan Patrols. Everything else i love.

I had that wobble with LOBO -- way back. I took him to Supa Quick [Menlyn] BUT Wynand was still there at the time.
He removed all the steering components and sent it to SYD's suspensions in Pretoria West -- that was control arm; pitman and all those other thingies that push n pull down there

That was on 1,263,000 km -- LOBO now has 1,301,700 on his clock - and to this day he has NEVER done that wobble with me again [even after I got him back from the Cape]

Thanks for sharing, Luckily it seems you got away with it.

Problem is though, that the Leaf spring setup of Lobo is easier to remedy than the coil spring setup of the GU/Y61. As the lateral movement is not contained by robust leaf springs, but rather a panhard rod and associated linkages thereof. SO even the slightest degree changes or bush wear can play havoc.

If you going to drive like a pensioner and only do 50 km/hr you will never feel the death wobble. Oupa, you need to put fut a little and get the revs past 3000.

A lot of times the wobble is really just a poorly balanced wheel, and there are only a few shops that I've had luck with balancing.

I also changed my panhard rod bushes, changed the pre load on the king pins and the "wobble" remained. By that time I had it balanced by 3 shops already. Finally took it to a decent shop, the technician started the rime and tyre on the balancing machine and called me. showed me the balance looked ok but then show me how the wheel surface goes up and down, turned the wheel a bit on the rim until it was running nearly flat. this was on HT tyres and my wobble was gone.

I also think that the fairly hard compound and long standing between trips some of our cars experience also adds up that the wheels loose some shape and introduce some out of roundness.

The Patrol's king pin's preload is a lot less than the Cruisers .

Friend of mine bought a Patrol after driving in mine.

He was a bit disheartened after he drove his newly acquired Patrol as it also had a death wobble and being an ex-Wrangler driver is scared the bejesus of him. After a long chat to him and convincing him not to get rid of the vehicle, he had it checks and found a loose wheel bearing. After sorting this out problem went away.

That said, mine had a slight vibration around 110km/h even thought I have two different sets of rims (one 17" with HT's and the other 16" with AT's). After a suspension upgrade and changing tyres ( Now to 16" MT) mine is 100%. So I think a lot of the time it is a combination of things and you just need to work through them systematically.
