I got stuck in the mud and there was no vehicle capable of towing me. so we waited for the morning when the ground got frozen. That, plus some spade work and the Patrol could get out.
My question: the axles were submerged in the muddiness for about 7 hours - any risk of damage and what should my post trip maintainance be?
Wow that looks like a load of fun !!.... well sort of.... well yes, it probably was fun till the wheels started spinning and you were going nowhere slowly....haha
But seriously, looking at the photo, it was probably only the diffs in the mud. and looking at the height of the mud to the wheels, probably only half the diff was in the mud. Depending on the consistency of the mud, which I presume was not mostly water, a trip to the nearest chassis wash place where they can jack the car up and power wash properly, should be all that is needed. This on condition your diff breather pipes are in good condition and don't leak. As the hot oil in the diff cools it will draw in a little air as the air inside the pumpkin cools. If the breather pipe is damaged, or the breather pipe end is blocked, there is a chance that it can suck a little moisture in from around the seals.
Good practice says drain the diff oil, and replace. If you do drain and the oil is still new, and without any signs of water sitting below the oil, then I don't see why you cannot reuse that oil again. ( I may be shot down on this though)
Great pic and must have been fun getting into that position . Your troll was properly stuck so as Cedric says, have it washed properly and also ensure the rims are also cleaned on the inside. Make sure all the mud is out of the callipers and universal joints.
After staying like that overnight I would look at diff oils and handbrake assembly. Let us know where it happened. Cedric and I want to go at take a shot at it.

PS: What Grant said about washing the brake calipers and between the disks and the thin back plate.... very important .... it makes a horrible grinding paste, the hand brake drum should have been above mud level, but spray a little waster in through the 2 little holes in the drum to rinse out any sand/mud. there is no rubbers that can get damaged in there as it's all mechanical. Also take the rims off and power hose the inside of the rims. The dried mud makes for some horrible wheel balancing....
There are the inspection points on the swivel bearing bolts mabe take one off poke with a piece of wire and have a look see?if any water comes out you need to repack ect .on the diffs I will just take the filler plug out look for any condens milk if you see any change otherwise let it go till next time .....wash wheels rims breaks ect and handbrake very clean like grant and rickster said......
It is in fact a track for Polaris quadbikes, but some good fun to be had there. We were actually finished and decided to go back around the dam, in the dark took the wrong track and before I knew it we were in the mud in 2x4, but once stuck switching to 4x4 did not made much of a difference.
The track is on council land (hence free for all) behind Goodies for Gardens in Glen Marais, but nice just to talk to the guys at the shop at goodies. They've gone quiet now that it is winter and there is not much activity wrt the polaris quads on the track anymore.

Draai die laagste van die vier boude in elke swivel bearing assembly uit, druk 'n draadjie in en sien of jy enige water raakgeboor kry. Ry diekar 'n entjie en draai dan die diff filler plugs uit, en kyk of die diff olie wit is.
As dit alles reg lyk, is jy waarskynlik OK.
