Hi Tinus,

Yes the prop has been balanced, but reading the workshop manual last night, I see that the run-out spec on the prop is only 0.6mm...so I am wondering whether if you exceed 0.6, even if the prop is "balanced" perhaps you will still get a vibration. Running the vehicle up on axle stands and watching the prop, I recon the run-out may be more than 0.6mm. I think I need to get the run-out measured with a dial gauge....and go from there.

Okay...well its been a while since I last posted.......

The Bold and the Beautiful is nothing compared to the on-going soap opera that is my Diff saga

:steamingears: :steamingears: :steamingears:

So 6 weeks, 3 prop-shaft specialists, and several heated discussions with my original diff guy later, it has finally been established that the vibration is due to a bent pinion on the second hand diff I purchased from Pretoria. So not only did the Pretoria Diff specialists that I paid to check the unit miss the fact that the axle was bent, they also failed to spot the bent pinion    Not Impressed!

So some hard (and very expensive) lessons learnt....now reverting back to the original axle and fixing the original diff. Isn`t hindsight great???

Looking forward to having a working Patrol again (even though I will be too poor to drive it anywhere!!!)....would never have thought this little mis-adventure could go so horribly wrong, but have to chalk it up to experience I guess.

Hi Ross,

Having read through this thread at some length, it seems you have had a lot of drama. :-(

It is not clear to me whether the original axle was ever fully stripped to determine exactly what the problem was? Was it and if so, what exactly had failed?

Cheers,
Clem

Hi Ross,

Often I find myself regretting the decision I made. This would not normally bee a problem, until I have to fork out the money. I also thought that this would seas to exist the older i got, but to my surprise it is happening more often.
The good news is that you know have a spare bend diff, with working side shafts that somebody will need. You have my simpathy.

Yes folks...my diff guy has lost the original diff center!!!!

WTF!!!!!????

Anyway, on the bright side he has at least accepted that it is his fault and he has to purchase a replacement at his own cost, but seriously.......how much more ridiculous can this situation become??? Based on how things have gone thus far, maybe that's a question I shouldn`t ask too loudly.

Unbelievable!!!
